Hi all

heres my dilemma hope you can help, ive had an Overclockers ownbrand 9800gx2 for several years, its finally failed even after the oven trick !

Now realising my pc is way too old for the latest top gpu's but seems to be ok to carry on for now, (no laughing at the back!) what graphics card would be reasonable to replace the gx2?, (dont say another gx2 :D they are still £100 refurbed)

pc:
E6850 @3ghz, 2gig ocz ram, Thermaltake750 Watt psu, win7x86,

some one has suggested the AMD7850, msi 'HD power edition'

is anyone currently using an older pc with a new gpu, any major problems? im not expectng top fps just decent game play in COD crysis etc

Would either of these suffice?

thanks for any replies

Hi there,

I would recommend a HD 6850. This nice ASUS model is currently only £100 and will offer performance superior to the 9800GX2 (while being smaller, cooler and quieter).

You could spend more on a HD 7850 - as they are very nice cards, but tbh in many cases you will be CPU bottlenecked, so it may not make sense to spend around twice the costs of a HD 6850 for the extra performance that may not be realised.

Also, while you are at it I would recommend you add in another 2GB of RAM and change your OS install to the 64bit version (you don't need to pay for this, just need to get hold of a 64bit disk, do a full reinstall and use your existing code).

Hi cmndr andi

just a quick reply from last month , sorry ive been very busy, and having had to wait an eon for OCr's to get the 7850's in today, ive kicked this one around a bit, mainly on the points below i have ordered a msi 7850 oc (the reviews elswhere are amazing.)

1) it runs vastly cooler than my previous card

2) runs on lower watts

& means i can warrant an upgrade to a smokin upgrade (2500k) if it turns out to be pants on ye olde rig.

which really is next on the list, i just need to know for my own curiosity
what one of these new cards will do on an older pc.
i read your recent post to dalzy, i suspect your answer mirrors a second upgrade here
very soon

:)

cheers

Graphics card updated to 7850

Hi all
just some feedback: I have recently bought a MSI 7850 twin Frozer oc from OCr's to upgrade my old pc , my old graphics burned out, (9800gx2 it ran at 75C) on COD or any bench mark, it was quite a fire breather.

Any way it was either a whole new pc or take a chance on a new graphics card and see what happens.

Well im impressed by the 7850 , its very quiet, ive actually checked several times to see if the fans were working, its a small card compared to the 9800, and only required the six pin power connector, not the 8 +6!

the Heaven results are below for anyone interested, the graphics card has warmed to a a mild 43C after a few runs and COD afterwards.:D

Cmndr Andi has suggested a bottleneck & i cant actually say ive seen any evidence , maybe the lower frame rate shown in heaven's results suggests its limit with this rig.

Overall i would rate this card A++ for value and the fact its already OC'd & just plugged it in, ran the nvidia uninstaller in safe mode, then installed he radeon driver, & played COD

problems none, worth the wait yes.

Thanks OCrs
