Old polytechnics

Remember look at course rankings not university rankings.

Depends whether you want to go on to do something in the same industry as your degree.

You can do a less respected degree at a highly respected university and trade on the university's reputation to get a job where they might not have intricate knowledge of whether your university excels in that particular field or not. :o

*shakes fist at UCAS*

Thanks for looking burnsy! I've just seen they require A-level maths at grade B though. That's me out!

I eventually intend to go to law so it's quite important that my uni has a good reputation on the whole, not just on the subject (though it's excellent at that as well, 9th in the country, boyah :p)

Just apply, I didn't have an A level in Maths and I was accepted for CompSci. The worst that can happen is that you get turned down. The times rates Southamtpon at 5th in the country for CompSci :)

Anyway, they take the maths modukes in the BTEC into consideration, I've taked to the admissions tutor regarding this a while ago :)

I don't believe I've done a maths module dude. I only have a B in GCSE maths so I doubt that holds much weight.

I see what you mean about the worst thing that can happen. I'm just a bit concerned wasting one of my five choices :) I could replace it with my Brighton choice I guess...

What grade did you get in your BTEC and what other qualifications do you have (if any) ?

so long as employers have heard of the place then they are usually happy.

for example if you have a Bsc from Peninsula, they aren't going to look at you too highly.

Best of luck applying, i'm applying to chemistry this year, my top choice is Bristol =]

The University of Bath used to be a poly many years ago and its now one of the better universities normally hovering around the top 10

I'm pretty sure since University of Bath received its royal charter in 1966, it's not considered a former polytechnic.

I know, what I mean was it started out as one many years ago, long before all the polys changed over.

I have mate. I just used those two examples as they're well known for being elite universities :)

I've applied for Sussex :) I'd love some input into what it's like there.

Edit

Damn sorry, was suppose to edit my previous post.

Well, I graduated 2 years ago and from what I gather the course has changed somewhat since i've been there.

It seems more CS courses are turning into vocational qualifications in actionscript :(

Name of the Uni is still far more important than how good the course is at that particular uni. Especially in banking
That is not completely accurate; the name of the Uni is important (especially in banking) because it will reflect the quality of the course; it is not just brand power playing here.

Am I?

I have a CS degree, and my friend is a PHd student that is helping tutor the courses we used to take as a BSc... at the same university.

I know that computing and IT is just learning to underline in word.
