Took one of the trucks out to Holsworthy today to pick up the 405 one of the guys from pug306.net is getting rid of. It had seen "better days" to put it gently. It was of course, V. cheap.

Pics!

Love at first sight.

Back to the yard, get it up on the ramp to see if it was going to be bean cans or a car.

Only thing i've found wrong so far, blown brake cylinder, failed brake line on a rear wheel and possible failed brake line on the chassis.

Pretty sure the last driver got their full monies worth out of the car ...

I need to do something about the stilts though.

Thought we'd give the underside a wash.

After digging around, the body of the car is absolutely SOLID, nothing more than surface scab rust, nothing. Even the CV boots are good!

The engine is so quite it's unreal! Think the megane might be going!

Be so nice to get back on the veg, not driven any distance for a few months, had to drop the kids to my mother on a campsite, cost me over a tenner in petrol!

I was lent a 405 a few years back when my own car was in the garage. Handled very well, and the one I had didn't go too badly considering it was a 1.6 carb.

If it wasn't for the lack of power steering I'm not sure I'd have wanted my Xantia back.

This one is the 1.9TD, electric windows (one of which still works!), PS, AC (which i'm guessing will need a bit of a birthday).

As ever, the wife is really impressed with my purchase. :(

I had a 405 SRI a few years ago. £250 at the time and bloody good fun.

£75 well spent :).

What? Either the engine isn't running or... no, I cant think of a single other explanation. Reliable and dependable are two things the XUD9 is. Quiet is absolutely NOT, however, something it is.

ok, i'll clarify my comment, for an xud9 engine it's is so quiet it's unreal! :p

I'm well aware that the pug derv isn't the quietest of animals, but by those standards this engine is VERY quiet, makes the wifes s-reg example sound like an absolute hound.

Holsworthy eh, that's my neck of the woods. :D

Must admit i was quite impressed when i typed "arse end of nowhere" into my TomTom and it took me straight to the car :D

Lovely roads out there in a car, but in a recovery truck the hills are a bit nasty :(

After a close going over we finally found a hole in the steel, so that got fixed today.

Got a fun thing with the headlights, only one main beam works at a time (take out one bulb and the other one comes one) i'm guessing the signs of mice eating the wiring might be involved somewhere

And i'm totally amazed that the air-con still works  :D no idea how, it should have leaked/rotted away long ago, but i sat in the car checking the lights and horn today and noticed that it was colder in the car than it was in the workshop, mad :D

It was down the end of a lane by a B&B and a farm.

The guy was actually selling the injector pump & injectors and get a free car :) I'm constantly amazed by the way people will abandon perfectly good vehicles for no reason.
