Hi guys,

I know what I have is all old stuff but, I dont game like most I just enjoy the oldies...my pc is setup in the garage for whenever I need to be out the way and I've got consoles in the house which I play on more. Having said that I still want the pc ready and waiting for when I want it

I had an old asus mobo, q6700 cpu, 4gb ram and the classic hd4890, this went wrong...not sure what was wrong with but I know the psu is OK, ram is OK, gpu is OK...I decided to treat myself as I know its all old hat and got a new mobo - asus maximus genezgene3, ssd, cpu i5, 12gb ram

Put this all together and works fine, really happy with it...put the hd4890 in and got a b2 error, now I either got lucky when I tested the gpu when the old setup packed and it decided to work 1 more time or the gpu bios needs updating or other

To check the mobo I put in a very old gpu which did work

I know it looks like I'm being tight but it just doesn't get the usage to warrant spending to much money, although rather than messing around im happy for new gpu as long as its budget and probably a good thing if I update the directx as well

What do you guys recommend, something simple to plug and play a bit better than the hd4890 but cheap

Thanks

you tried setting it to csm instead of uefi? cant get my b550 to post with a 6850 that works fine in my old x58, hard to get hold of anything cheap and decent right now.

Hi, I haven't...

I've had look but I cant see where to change it?

The only uefi option i can see is in the boot option priorities...it says boot option 1 - Kingston ssd or uefi generic flash driv x 2 or disable

After looking around in the bios and manual it doesnt look like something I can change...after re-reading what I wrote earlier I missed off the 4 or IV...I have the asus maximus IV gene-z gene-3

Ok, so since trying the hd4890 the old card is now not working!!

For reference i think its an gt640 but until I can get it to work I cant be sure

This however is not bringing up the b2 error, it just doesn't get detected and the pc just uses the onboard graphics, its also not listed in device manager when windows loads up

Can anyone help shed some light on this

Hi watercooledman, i only have these 2...

The HD4890 brings up the b2 error which then just hangs without loading any bios or anything
The GT640 doesnt get recognised in either slot but did yesterday, drivers were installed and was working fine, now not listed on device manager

you say treated yourself to new system, to me it looks like you have replaced one ancient system with a slightly less ancient 2nd hand system, It could easily be a faulty motherboard at that age.

ha, you really dont like my psu...

I think I'll take you advice though, I'm gunna get a more up to date and a better PSU as these i can keep hold of even if the board goes back

whilst i'm shopping...if you could recommend a couple of PSU options i'd be greatful and when the stuff arrives i'll let you know how things are going

That's because bad PSU can damage/kill rest of the PC.
You wouldn't try running your car with fuel contaminated with water and what ever, or would you?
That's the equivalent for what bad PSU can do.
And because of low quality parts and bad design garbage PSUs are lot more likely to fail badly.
