I am running an old SATA 1 Raptor as my primary and a Hiatchi as a secondary for steam games etc. My question is would I see much improvment with upgrading them both to standard SATA 3 drives?

Or is my 10k Raptor still up to par?

It depends on what raptor you have. But going by a 150GB one, the only improvement it has over a Samsung F3 1TB drive is seek times, 7ms opposed to 13ms. The Samsung drive would blow it out the water with everything else.

Personally I would get a nice fast, large drive. They've come back down in price again now, and they perform extremely well for what they are. Then in the future invest in an SSD for your OS and a few games of your choice, the rest can be kept on the other drive still.

The difference an SSD will make is phenomenal :) It's down to how much space you actually need though to judge what you can get really.

Edit: Some comparisons to look at: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2009/10/06/samsung-spinpoint-f3-1tb-review/3

Thanks for the replies.

Been looking at a few ssd's just hearing so many stories of failures.

Next month I may upgrade my rig with two ssd's and a few other goodies.

SSD's are just fine. I have a supposedly fairly unreliable SSD, but it's got 10,000 hours on it now with 3TB of writes, it's still in perfect health :)
