'old school' built in phone

I have seen a few cars 5-7 years old that have a pre-bluetooth phone which requires an extra sim.

How well do these work if at all and do phone companies offer the second sim facility? Or do you need to open up your phone for each journey.

My 10 year old Omega has a built in phone which is entirely hands free (no physical phone), microphone is integrated into the interior light and sound obviously comes out of the bose sound system.

It works by inserting a separate pay as you go sim card (O2 or T mobile iirc) into a box situated in the glove box. So yes it is a separate phone number but you can divert calls from your mobile to the number in the car, my phone is set to do this after 15 seconds in case I forget to set it to divert calls immediately at the start of a journey. It also seems to get more reception in the sticks than my phone.

i guess he means 2 sims, one number, in which id have thought the answer is no. Call forwarding as mentioned is the most effective way, that or give people the number of your car.

I remember one chap on here bought a lovely silver AMG, that had a 'phone' with a proper cord etc on it :D

My old s-class has a phone in the arm rest with a cord etc. I have just abandoned it completely and fitted a bluetooth kit instead. which autoconnects to my normal phone. Far more effective.

Forwarding calls, paying an extra contract, or even topping up the PAYG route all the time. What a mess that would be to use the inbuilt one :p

I don't think mobile comms providers allow you to have duplicate sims.

My car has a wee Motorola V50 in it, remember them?

I just put a payg sim in it and set up the voice dialing for the contacts. Works a treat with the car's inbuilt microphone.

I don't even bother to forward calls from my mobile - I just use it to make calls. Who wants to answer the phone when you're out for a good drive anyway :p

I googled around and it seems that vodaphone, tmobile and orange do (or at least did) offer such a service with 2 sims on the same contract. The second sim was activated by dialling a code on your mobile.

Dont supposed anyone on here has actually used this?

I had one in my C36, it looked great, real retro. Put a tenner on a sim card when I bought it. Sold it with the same tenner on it still :p to much hastle to use.

I think if it were me, there would have been a desire to modify a handsfree kit into the car phone for the sheer hell of it :p

(But I'm not posh enough to own an automobile with a built in telephone :o)

Hi

If you are a business customer on Orange, our Single Number service would allow you to have the same phone number on two SIM cards. One SIM could then be left in your car phone and any calls to your number would then go to your car if your mobile was turned off.

Further information on Single Number can be found on our website at http://business.orange.co.uk/home/corporate/products-and-services/services-and-accounts/voice-services/single-number?printpreview=1.

I hope this might be helpful.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to install bluetooth rather than move to a business mobile tariff?

Depends on the car. Its virtually impossible to install factory BT to mine (there is a bodge, but it doesnt work very well).

I am happy with an aftermarket BT kit, but the inbuilt system would be nicer.
