Old Style RPGs

I bought Avadon: The Black Fortress in the recent Steam sales and it has reminded me how much I love the old-style RPG genre where you can build a party of 5 or 6 and use their individual abilities in a strategic way. Unfortunately, Avadon lacks in that you can only have a maximum of 3 in your party, and even after gaining a few levels there're only a handful of options and abilities to use.

Does anyone know of any party-based RPG in this mould? Specifically I'm looking for strategic combat on a turn basis (or space to pause sort of turn basis), ideally with a top-down or isometric viewpoint. I looked up the old Ultima games but unfortunately the graphics are now just a tiny bit too outdated. I've played all the Baldur's Gates, Planescape: Torment, NWN, Fallout 1 and 2, DAO and probably many others. Are there any other games out there to tempt me, maybe more obscure than big name titles that I'll probably know? I've tried KOTR and have Mass Effect ready to download, but I'm not currently fancying either of those.

Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader follows a similar style, based in the 16th century. It's actually quite a good game, released in 2003.

As far as I remember it doesn't really have the party/group aspect like BG and NWN though...

You could always do Neverwinter Nights 2 - I preferred the first one, but doesn't mean the second is poor ;)

Icewind Dale has a similar setting to Baldur's Gate, so I'd highly recommend that as a follow on from the BG games. There are quite a few as well that you could work through :)

The Diablo series can have the group aspect but it isn't really turn-based, so might not be to your liking...

Other than those I'm at a loss really, but I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this thread :)

Avernum series (Just re-released out Avernum 1 with the Avadon engine - Mac - soon to be PC)
Eschalon 1 and 2
Drakensang 1 and 2.
Temple of Elemental Evil.

Obvious ones maybe, but the up to date games I can think of are the FF series (XIII-II is out soon I think, I lost interest after they became more linear) and Mass Effect and Dragon Age are all games where you can level individual characters in your party to suit your needs and control them all individually.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I may have to look into NWN2 if I can pick it up cheap somewhere. I definitely have my eye on Grimrock for the future - been following that one on these forums.

As for the Temple of Elemental Evil - I have it lying around somewhere and has played it a little way in and was really enjoying it, but then for some reason it stopped launching and all my hunting around for patches and assistance didn't fix the problem, which is a shame.

Well worth getting it to work. Youll need the Circle of 8 patch.

The only trouble i ever had was with magic missile crashing the game if you selected to many targets.
