Otherwise nothing that will accelerate hi-def video not from a bluray or hddvd disc. If you're hoping to play downloaded hi-def content you will be disappointed.

A hd2400 doesnt cost very much 2nd hand, so may be worth a try.

Seriously? so... no software / codec will be able to do gpu decoding to downloaded HD?

Does is matter if I grab an HD2400/HD2600 or an HD3650/HD3850?
Aren't all three the same UVD-wise? That is, I know the difference between UVD (HD2400/HD2600) and UVD+ (HD3650) is the support of HDCP on higher resolutions, but does the strength of a card also affect its video decoding / 2d performance, and not just its 3d?

Well not mkv files anyway. Which tends to be the container of choice on the net.
