Older M.2 slots better than SATA SSD?

Hi Guys

I want to do a fresh install of windows and I am getting low on storage space. I just realised my Mobo has an M.2 slot - I assumed it didn't as its 4 years old now. Would you recommend moving over to M.2 NVME drive now - will I see a performance increase? Not sure if this is an older version or not?

My current mobo is: Asus X99-E Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

spec reads;

Storage New Intel® Core™ i7 Processors
- 1 x M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 Socket 3 with M Key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (Support PCIe storage device only)*
Intel® X99 Chipset with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and Intel Rapid Storage Technology 14 support
- 1 x SATA Express port (compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports)
- 8 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports
Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology**
*The M.2 socket shares bandwidth with PCIe X16_3
** Due to chipset behavior, The SATA6G_7/8, SATA6G_9/10 ports do not support IRST including RAID configuration.
***These functions will work depending on the CPU installed.

My main HDD right now is : Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Thanks for your reply - would you say the perfermance is not much different as its an older mobo/m.2 slot or just generally there is not much of a performance gain between m.2 and ssd?

Won't make difference to system. You will only see improved speed if you are editing 4k or 8k raw videos files
