Just put together a system to use as a spare/2nd system using various older parts.

It's running a Socket 478 P4 Prescott CPU 2.8Ghz at stock speed (14x200).

The performance is good for an older system, but I did notice that it seems to be running quite warm compared to the AMD64 CPUs I'm used to (temperature is anything between 44-48 at idle, not sure about under load).

Just wondered if this is normal for one of these?

Thanks for replies :)

Don't mean to be annoying but it's load temperatures that count. 44-48*c idle however sounds quite typical for an early prescott. The chips would often run around 70-75*c loaded. High temperatures aren't a concern for this chip unless it's actually throttling itself.

More of a worry for the board and power circuits than the actual chip itself, but yeah they run blazing hot and with the stock sink may even touch 80s under not so good ventilation.

Thanks for replies.

Seems like so long as it's running fine and the temperatures don't become silly then there Isn't much to worry about ;)

Got a nice Thermalright SP-94 for SKT478 for sale if you want it? Plus a nice Vantec Tornado for those who don't care about noise! Drop me a line if interested.

For my spare s478 3.0e ghz system I just opened his cage and flew my crow direct to a Manchester outfit that has Arctic Cooling Freezer 4 s478 coolers still on sale for @ £12.
