Oldies in here! - SDRAM

Hi Chaps,

I have ended up with an old P3 base unit which has just been given to me.

It isn't too slow but having only 64mb of Memory let's it down just a little.

I do have a 256mb stick of PC133 SDRam here.

However, when I put it in the P3 base unit I cannot get it to post. It beeps once though.

The only difference, is the 64mb stick is single sided and the 256mb stick double sided.

Could there be another reason for the problem?

Both sticks are unbranded and the Mobo is an MSI MS6183.

Have you tried it on its own. Mobo may not like single and double sided memory together. Are you sure the memory works?

Yes and yes.

It only registers the 64mb stick with both of them in there. Regardless of which slots I put the mem in.

According to the Mobo manual it should work.

Max size per DIMM is 256Mb and Double Sided is supported.

I've had a similar problem with a number of older PII / PIII and early athlon boards.

Often PC133 memory isn't properly recognised or will refuse to boot.

It's usually due to a change in the way memory was addressed from PC100 to PC133.

If you can locate some PC100 Dimms these should work fine but only at 100Mhz so you can't use the full 133Mhz FSB. Some PC133 will work but it's pot luck.

Also .... just thought a BIOS update may improve memory support

Have you tried updating the bios? Failing that i have some 64Mb SDRAM sticks up on MM at the mo

Yea I updated BIOS before posting. Not after 64mb DIMM's as only have 2 DIMM slots.

Didn't old Pentiums require you to put the memory in matched pairs?

what happens if you try to boot with just the 133MHz stick installed?
