Never really thought about it this way but I do kinda agree, when you hear about Swimmers walking away from Olympics with 5+ golds at a single Games or whatever and then think about other sports and what opportunities there are.
Realistically in track and field you have to be an absolute monster to get more than 3 golds in one go, and most of the time even that is limited to people who run two sprints (100/200/400) and one or two relays, maybe Long Jump in the case of someone like Carl Lewis.
That said, it would be pretty harsh on say a Butterfly expert if they ditched your specific stroke, or indeed your preferred distance. So any reduction needs to be done in a stage fashion, e.g. say it comes into affect from 2020 or something, to give people plenty of warning and time to train for the vents that will be around then.
