I had my Appendix out last year, and the whole thing was a nightmare.
I'd had on and off stomach pains which I'd always put down to being from food poisoning, but with hindsight, it was clearly my Appendix grumbling.
Woke up one morning last March at the weekend and it was aching, so waited until the Monday when I could see a Doctor. He said that it 'might' be my appendix, but it could be just some gastro issue and that I should come back if it gets worse in the next 24 hours. Next day it was the same, day after it felt a bit better, day after I was fine and went back to work on the Friday. When I got home on the Friday night I felt terrible again all weekend, saw another Doctor for a second opinion on the Monday and she said it was for sure my Appendix and sent me straight to hospital!
Due to the length of time involved, my Appendix would have actually already have burst... but in some people, the body actually prevents it rupturing by surrounding it in tissue, so that it becomes a large mass. However this can't be just removed, so I had to spend a week in hospital being treated on anti-biotics to lower the swelling. Especially annoying when so many other people coming in to the Acute Ward for Appendixs (plural?) and just had them whipped out and were gone the next day.
So, even though I was fine after, you still have to have it removed because it could happen again. So two months later I had it removed via keyhole surgery and was home the next day, feeling very sore, but otherwise fine. I was ok for about four days, until I no longer had an appetite and I couldn't do a number 2. I then started getting bouts of pain which had me in agony and I could barely sleep. Went back to see my surgeon who said I'd have to come back the next day for a scan, but he certainly didn't expect to see any complications, especially so soon.
The next day it turned out from the scan that an abscess had formed, most likely from the surgery and appendix mass. This had to be drained, so they readmitted me to hospital and drained it by them shoving a tube into me under local anesthetic. I then had a bag draining this fluid strapped to my leg, it was horrible. However, I was still quite ill and wasn't improving. So about a week later they did another scan and I still had another abscess even deeper so had to do another drain. This time they said that because of the deepness, there was only so far the local anesthetic would go when putting the new tube in. It was honestly the most painful experience of my life, it felt like somebody was ripping a hole in my bladder!
I eventually got better after that, and was home after about 2 weeks. Worst experience of my life though, I thought I was going to die. I've broken a few bones, and nothing was like as painful as this was.
