It just is. Unfortunately I know this from experience working for a major mobile phone recycler.

If we don't data wipe phones, securely, we run the risk of prosecution under the data protection act.

I wonder if CEX are ISO 27001 certified.
 
Does not compute. What kind of individual buys a used HDD from a high street store such as CEX?

Does the data protection act really apply to people giving up their second hand goods which at one point contained data (and presumably at least factory reset/formated) ?
 
i'd never sell or buy a second hand hard drive, what if the previous owner had a penchant for the darker side of life and the police sieze your pc!

If you passed on your drives to anyone without securely wiping them first then you deserve to have your bank account emptied.

Now just wipe the drive and move onto your next non drama that you can immediately take to the internet over.

You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't even bother to remove SIM cards, let alone SD cards or factory reset the device.

People are unfortunately, on the whole, thick as ****.
 
People actually Buy/Sell SH disk drives!

It isnt as if they are that expensive new.

The only reason why I might buy one is on the basis that I might get a few Easter eggs, ;) :D

I certainly wouldn't sell one :confused: (Old drives that are any good still make good back up drives after all)

Any that I really don't want anymore get dismantles so I can play with the amazingly strong magnets and chuck the rest in the fire! :p
 
I'd sell an old mechanical drive I'd wiped. The worst that might happen is there's some data on bad sectors that have been swapped out.

With SSDs it's a bit more tricky, due to the fact that zero-wiping them might not actually zero-wipe all the memory, due to wear levelling algorithms and stuff.

People need to be forced to take responsibility for their own data security rather than letting them hide behind legislation put onto businesses inheriting their second hand items to be honest.
 
find the address on the tenancy agreement for the previous owners

go and poo through their letterbox

seems reasonable.

SSDs have erase commands that they can be sent to avoid this issue. Alternatively just encrypt the entire drive (do this anyway) and then remove it from your PC. The disk is unreadable if you don't have the recovery key or the contents of the TPM chip.
 
He wants CEX to give him compensation because he bought a drive with data on it, ergo the drives he sold them were sold on with his information on.

Obviously if you were so worried about someone recovering your data you would sell it to CEX....

Yes take them to the cleaners mate.
