Yea google do a test to a certain portion of users to test if the people like the new features. Even the most trivial things like space between the top and the first search result etc they do split testing and huge analysis on the users behaviour and how much longer it takes them to find the result they need. There is a few lectures on youtube from marissa mayers(who is hot btw ) where she talks about it.
Before the auto suggest drop down etc became default on google I had a few days where I would get the feature and some days I wouldn't.
Don't know if their testing a new version of google but I've read that they are working on a faster and better search engine
Looks like they have combined the normal search and images, if you select 'options' and 'images from the the page' you get them as well as page descriptions.
I'm sure it'll feather it's way out perfectly for google but having to have images.google.co.uk and also google.co.uk without a strong link between the two 'post search' seems a bit awkward.
EDIT: Tell a lie, the bar disappears after a search. It's not really a problem, just click 'show options', then 'images from the page' and scroll down to the bottom where the familiar 'image results for xxxxx' appears.
Seems like a longer winded way of doing it though :/
I don't understand the point in this? Ok the 'search for images' link is a few results down the page, but what exactly was wrong with the layout before? Gay.
