My experience is limited in this so be nice pls.

My hd was sometimes not being recognised, so I downloaded Linux ehere you can run it straight from the cd, so now that I could no longer access my HD I decided to go through Linux which looks great, but there's no sign of the problem hd. I was able to make a backup of the hd before it died, so if I buy another hd am I able to use this Linux to move over the the back up hd to the new one? The backed up hd is now on a 1TB external hd.

Sorry if I missed something, but Linux is taking time to get used to and at least I am still on the internet.

TY in advance

If you have a True Image backup you just need to install a fresh hard drive and then boot with a True Image recovery CD.

From there you can restore the saved image to the new drive.

first
try and see if the drive can be renamed in windows

ctrl panel
admin tools
computer management
storage
disc management

see if its there it may be lacking a disc letter .. like c d f r x etc etc

if it is assign one and it should be fine or if u really think its knackered try something like

http://www.r-studio.com/

disc recovery type prog.. which u can buy or dload.

linux ubuntu or kubuntu what ever version u have may well recognise the disc it sometimes does sometimes doesnt ive used it to recover unrecognisable discs b4.

couple things is the disc recognised in your bios ? have you changed anything there?

is there at least power to the disc? as i assume you are using linux from cd...

I can see the hd in the bios....

In Linux it shows up, but no information on the hd is given.

Linux is being run from the cd as I did this only in case something went wrong (friend years ago kept pushing for Linux, hence).

Nothing changed in bios.

I will be checking data and power in the morning and maybe moving data cable to another spot.

was the drive originaly used with linux or windows ?
added

i guess you are using a single operating system and one hard drive ?

Windows xp pro .. as normal, no disc was given with the pc

I have 2 internal hd and two external.

The operating system was on a WD 320gig hd and my Steam game hd is on a 1tb; both externals are 1tb

well tbh if u feel you have a good back up and u have exhuasted all the bios options for recognising the drive and also there are no other hardware conflicts, and you have tried to recover everything with something like r-studio if there is tottaly nothing left on there that u absolutly need to have.... i would try to format the drive under the linux cd and it looks like if u want to use windows get a copy somehow... and do a reinstall. tbh an install takes an hour at most with updates and drivers etc etc as long as u dont need anything of the disc it may well be the easiest way

if a fresh install fails it may well be the drive has just given up the ghost .... but i would try the install bit first .. just have that as the only drive in the system as in disconnect anything else and set the bios to boot from cd with a copy of what ever operating system you want to use.. hopefully that helps .. fingers xxsd ive not missed anything but just throwing in a few suggestions..
