Hi all, my first post on ocuk so go easy on me.
Looking to build a pc to take to uni with me. Im doing aerospace engineering so i need a pretty good pc for CAD I also love my games.
Im trying to build a pc now (while i have the cash) that will last as long as possible.
Im gettting a 20" screen and wont be getting a bigger one so ive considered this with the choice of graphics card.
A high priority with this system is quietness as it will be left on in my dorm overnight and im a pretty light sleeper :( To quietent the case ill cut out all the honeycomb fan guards, remove the psu finger guard and sandwhich a peace of dish cloth foam between the fans and the case and use soft push pins.
Here is what ive come up with so far, any suggestions and tips i would be really greatfull!:

I just got one of those q6600 they are pretty nice. Especially for supreme commander, max graphics, huge map, 2 hours in with 3 ai no slowdown :D

Huge improvement over my old athlon64 4000+

have a look at the Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink few people round here like them and are pretty silent.

fan wise look at the Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM or Scythe S-FLEX 1200RPM.

case wise maybe consider the lian li pc7 or akasa eclipse 62.

memory wise if you're using vista consider OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2.

Im quite happy with the infinity, its ment to have a good mounting bracket and some of the best cooling i might change the stock fan on it though.
As for the case fans good suggestion, i was aware of these but i can 3 zalmans for the same price and undervolt them will this be as good ? Has anyone had any experience with sharkoon fans ?
As for the case i love the look of the p180 and the eclipse and lian li are just plain boring, so for now ill stick with the p180.
As for the ocz ram its slower then the geil stuff and ive never overclocked so what sort of speeds and timings will it reach? and what is better high speeds or tight timings ?

Where's the PSU? DVD-RW?

In theory 4 sticks of RAM is not a good idea if you wish to max out your overclock since it puts more strain on the north bridge chipset, although I am using 4 sticks myself and so far it's been working fine with my oc.

I think with Geil it's a mixed bag - some can do very high oc while others don't oc very well at all, depends on the motherboard as well, but having 4 sticks certainly doesn't help.

Cheers steve ill bare that in mind. Looking at the prices 2x 2gb sticks is only 10 squid more so it wont break the bank :0
As for motherboard ive gone for the oem striker extreme is it worth £140 or would you recomend another board ? My first overclock so ease of use must be considered!

If you plan to add another GTS in the future it is safer to get the HX620 instead.

Striker Extreme is not worth the money tbh even for £140 from clearance. For £25 less you can get a brand new P5N32-E Plus SLI which uses the 650i NB + 570Sli SB that supports dual full speed 16x PCI-E and overclocks just as well.

Or for £82 the P5N-E SLI is very good value for money.
