Hi guys,

I posted recently about startup problems I am having with my PC. When I start the machine, fans spin, graphics card lights up then it shuts down after a couple of seconds. It was working fine a couple of days ago - nothing was changed or upgraded - it wasn't even moved! Things I have tried to fix the problem:

* Swapping power supply.
* Swapping/removing memory modules.
* Tried different motherboard.
* Removed graphics card so it will use internal graphics.

I'm at a total loss as to what to try next. Could it possibly be the cpu gone bad? The machine is approx 1.5 years old specs are:

* i7 4770k
* 16gb Corsair vengeance DDR3
* Gigabyte z87x-ud5h
* Gigabyte G1 980ti
* Corsair tx750m power supply

Anybody any ideas what I can try next to try diagnose the problem?

CPU cooler working correctly?

Is the RAM working properly? Tried to only have one RAM stick in and if it doesn't work try another RAM stick in the same slot to rule out the first stick isn't the issue?

Could be processor.
I have fired up a machine with no heat sink on the processor before and placed my finger against the chip. It heats up like a hot plate within a split second so it could be a heat issue? What do you have on the processor?

Have you tried removing each of the components one by one and then tried booting up after each one is removed?

Have you checked to see what error settings are on the motherboard? Perhaps 'shutdown on error'?

Were you just using it when it shut down?

Yep, tried that several times on two different motherboards. CPU cooler is spinning properly on startup. As I've changed motherboards i've also changed thermal compound.

@wedmonds i have a Alpenföhn Matterhorn heatsink using arctic silver paste. Freshly reapplied this morning while swapping motherboards. The CPU has never been overclocked. Motherboard doesn't even get to displaying a number - shuts down before then. No, I wasn't using it when it shut down, was using it fine the previous day, went to start it up and now constantly boot loops.

Billzz I had a similar issue and I too was stumped... fans spin up motherboard posts and a few seconds later system shuts down!

I discovered my issue was the signal from the gpu was not getting picked up on start up and the system shutdown. What fixed my issue was simply securing the DVI cable as it had worked its self loose when I moved my pc.

Not sure if its as simple as that for you but mine was just a cable issue.

The motherboard should at least remain on with power connected and switched on. If this does not happen then it has to be motherboard or processor.

If you have tried with everything else being disconnected then I would suspect a either of these being the issue. In other words, a right pain in the ar**

OK quick update - the CPU has gone bad. I took it to a local repair shop, tried a couple of different processors - booted perfectly each time - RMA time!

Thanks all for the input - hopefully this will be sorted soon.
