on or off

Depends whats it's doing and whether you want to spend money needlessly/kill the environment.

Theoretically PC parts will last longer if you leave them on all the time.
In practice you replace them far before they break anyway.

Aye you'll probably upgrade your pc before it comes to the time when they supposedly start wearing out. Unless I'm doing anything e.g. long style defrag/error check etc my PC always goes off before I hit the sack.

It depends on where your pc is as well. Leaving your pc on in your room with the constant humming away can affect your sleep, 'junk' sleep I think it's known as. However I'll leave my pc on if I'm downloading large files, defragging, formatting and the like.

Off because the fan noise would prevent me from sleeping, however quiet I could make it.

Always off at night.....

1. Because of the noise
2. To save electricity (you tend to be more concerned with this if you pay your own leccy bill)
3. In the summer makes my room hot as hell

What do you do with your other electronics.
Hi-Fi, Radio, TV, DVD Player/Recorder etc etc.

Do you leave the TV on 24/7 with the volume turned down presumably.
All your radios and Hi-Fi left on again with the volume down.
Video reorder, DVD Player fully powered up.
All other electronics fully powered up 24/7.
Do you never switch lights off - apart from the bedroom presumably.
What’s so special about the PC?

If you are on broadband with 24 hour connection another good reason to power down unless you particularly want to leave yourself exposed to the hackers out there.
Why pull dust into the PC all the time.
Why push your electricity bills up for no benefit.

In most domestic situations it's a 'no-brainer' to me.
It provides no practical benefit and has nothing but disadvantages.
Electronics don’t like thermal cycling but you can take it too far.
I'd be more concerned about fire risk than some potential increase in the life of the electronic components.

Leaving any significant electrical kit on 24/7 when you can easily avoid it is just a liability, risk and wasteful.

My main desktop PC tends to be turned off at night (however, these days that doesn't tend to be until after 1 or 2am anyway). It is too noisy and has blue fan LEDs shining away.

I do however have a small download box which tends to be on 24/7. This runs as an email / file / web server as well as doing overnight downloads. My routers are on 24/7 because holding a constant sync gives a better BRAS throughput for MaxDSL connections (as for the hackers, they'll have a job getting through my smoothwall :))

As for other electronic appliances, lights and other electronics they get turned off. TVs and stereos are powered down completely unless they have some annoying setting that gets reset to default when turned off.

My new htpc is almost on 24/7. Maybe the odd occasion I will have to turn it off completely but on average it will be on constant for weeks at a time.

Before that I had a shuttle sn45g acting as an htpc and it was on costantly for 4 years, it was turned off 3 or 4 times in that whole period only to clean the dust out and check everything was seated properly.
