How can you tell/see how many cares are running ?
I done control/Alt delete and on CPU i can only see 2 running reads core 1 and core 2
I have gone from an e6600 to the Q9550
And what is a good bit of free software to look at temps ?

Thanks for your help

i have just downloaded "core temp" and that only shows 2 cores ? am i missing something here.
Also when booting up by cpu it say's 4 counts or somthing like that.

did you do a cmos reset when you put the new chip in also go into the bios and check the cpu config to see what that says!
and core temp and real temp are good for reading temps! also go into device manager to see if it is reading the cpu ok

WOW guys that was quick response thank you to all.
I have just done what Taziir said "msconfig > Boot > Advanced options. Make sure Number of Processors is not ticked."
