Onboard Graphics question.

All depends on what you'll be using it for and what your expectations are...

Playing BF3/Crysis 2 at 1080p? Not gonna happen :p

However, web browsing, playing 1080p videos, etc all fine.

I've just set up an i3 2100 with the lower HD 2000 graphics and can play Half-Life 2 at 1280x720 with most settings at high and with 2x MSAA, getting a solid 40-50fps :D

i would be happy play tf2 at lowest settings with steady fps, and most valve games.
would this be possible?

Thanks.

Team Fortress 2? should be similar to HL2 as they both run on source, I'm downloading it at the moment actually so will give it a try in half an hour for you, see what sort of fps I get :)

Just gave it a quick go (as I'm rubbish at it!) and was getting 30-40 in quiet moments and down to about 25fps when it got hectic, 1280x720, mixture of medium high for the settings, that's on the HD2000 graphics, so if you got a cpu with the HD3000 version you'd probably be ok.

I dont know if the Gen 3 suffers from same problem as the Asrock Z68 Extreme4 when using the igpu you had to raise vcore to 1.19v to stop the computer restarting it self when it wants.

If it's an hd3000, TF2 should be playable at low/medium settings depending on res.

If I was you, I'd go for a cheaper mid-range card now and hold off on a serious upgrade until around March/April next year (or whenever ATI and Nvidia release their next gen). It's worth having a look at the Nvidia refurb section - £90 for a 1gb GTX 460 is a bargain...

Would the onboard graphics be ok for web browsing and video playback?

Of course :D even playing high bitrate 1080p video through VLC my i3 was only running at 30-40% usage, a 2500k is overkill for web browsing/1080p playback if anything.

To reiterate what's been said above though, deffo look at adding a GTX460 or similar, for £90 it's a no brainer and will last you until the next series of nvidia/AMD cards come out, with that you'll be able to play any modern game at medium/high deepening on resolution.
