Onboard RAID 0 vs Controller Card RAID 0

After comparing my own benchmark results to see what I should be getting according to the net, it seems that my hdds' performance falls significantly short of expectations. My RAID 0 setup consists of 2 raptors in RAID 0 using the onboard Sil3114 controller on my DFI LanParty nf4 SLI-DR.

If this is a stupid question then i apologise in advance: Do on-board RAID controllers not keep the channels entirely separate, losing some RAID 0 performance gain?

The reason I ask this is because whenever I've read benchmark articles on the net about RAID0 setups, the tester has nearly always used a separate RAID controller card to run the tests. If I was aiming to release the full potential of my 2 raptors, is it worth getting one? Or is there something else that I may be overlooking?

I've always had the most up-to-date drivers, not really looked into BIOS but I believe I have updated it a couple of times a while ago, and I don't think there's been any updates since...
