At the moment I'm using an Asus Maximus Hero VII motherboard, though I couldn't really compare the onboard sound to anything as don't know much at all about etc

Budget is around £150 so I was looking at getting a Corsair HyperX cloud headset and then maybe spending what was left on a sound card (Sound Blaster Z) or DAC to go with it.

It will mainly be used for music and gaming too

Would adding a sound card or DAC make much of a difference or would I be better off sticking with the onboard sound and getting a better headset / pair of headphones?

The onboard SupremeFX 2014 on the Asus Maximus Hero VII whilst ain't as great as STX etc, it is pretty decent...and should be good enough for the Kingston HyperX Cloud headset.

If you are happy enough with the current onboard SupremeFX 2014, then it might worth you actually spending the money elsewhere instead.
