Well, I really did want to go Nvidia this round, but they took too long.

But now one of my 7950's has died (just while rebooting, not even under any load) and will be sending off for refund next week.

Now left with the decision - do I sell the remaining one and go Nvidia?

Thing is, I want two of the same cards, and to be honest, I don't want to buy another DCU II 7950. It's not the size of the cooler that bugs me, but the fact that Asus cheaped out on it a bit.

But I want more than 2GB memory. Provided they don't die, I plan to keep them a long time (feel like I have said that a lot over the last few months), and am running 2560x1440 res.

Maybe I should just see how I get along with one card....

I'm stuck between:

1) Single GTX 680 4GB for £500
2) SLI GTX 670 2GB
3) Tri-fire 7850 2GB
4) Just get another 7950

To be honest, I was surprised how well the single 7950 handled BF3.

OP that sounds like no problem. A single 7950 will game nicely while you wait for an RMA. Do you overclock them? They should be within 5% of a 7970 clock-for-clock.

Send them both back and get a 7970, don't listen to the Nvidia fanboys, the 600 series is riddled with problems like red screen of death, stuttering etc

Yeah, I have no loyalty, but it would be nice to go nvidia again after having amd so long now.

I just don't know if I want to go back to 2GB if have cards for long time. Both 4GB 670 and 680 are quite horribly overpriced.

2GB is the same problem I have with 3 x 7850 - but it would be lovely to play with trifire for once :D

But am actually thinking of going dual reference 7970 - as I have come to teh conclusion I like cards that exhaust heat. With a hellishly hot processor like the 3930k, anything that means less heat in the case is good!

If you didn't have any problems with CrossFire, then why change?

You would be giving yourself hassle by selling another gpu at a loss, for almost the same performance presuming you go SLI.

What I mean by almost the same performance is that both sets of 79's and 6's are ridiculously fast when oc'd/hotclocked in almost every game out there and I very much doubt you will notice a realistic difference in gameplay at all.

If going for a single gpu, you are only losing performance and probably won't enjoy that.

AMD are **** and the drivers are shockingly bad.

It depends whether an individual wants to aknowledge or not that they both have their fair share of problems.

I do have on problem with the 7950's right now, and it does bug me an awful lot - the fact that using monitor sleep mode will cause system to hang.

Seems this is only a crossfire thing, as monitor sleep is working fine with single card.

Monitor stanby is something I would like to use. Have tried all available drivers, clean installs, etc, but nothing solves this issue.

This is the main reason I am considering moving from 79XX cards.

As mentioned above it would be nice to again have cards that exhaust heat from the case, even if they are not ass efficient...

Guess I need to think on this some more.

Think will be sticking with AMD

I know how to handle the monitor sleep bug, but I am not liking the sound of the stutter issues on the 6XX series.

It's looking like it's between Powercolor PCS+ 7950 or reference VTX 7970 at the prices I can currently find them for.

There is a £40 difference in price.... not sure which I would prefer, silence or exhausting hot air

I have exactly same with my Sapphire 7950, was really annoying as upgrades from a GTX460 on a wim and had no hassle with that and also remember ATI driver problems way back in past so was wondering if I'd made the right choice when I bought it.
The only main difference for me at the moment is being able to play BF3 in Ultra though for money I thought is be able to get higher than an average of 55fps as I was getting that on high with last card.

Also I get a flickering on desktop when monitor is set to 120hz.
Hopefully these two things will be sorted in 12.5 whenever that is released. I'm trying to live the card, but up to now its the least WOW factor I have had on an upgrade.

I've never really had any problems with either nvidia or amd, apart from coil whine on a 580 but that is common it's not a fault of nvidias.

Whether you get a 7950/70 670/680, you'll be getting a great piece of kit.

In the end I went with 2 x MSI GTX 670 OC.

Think they are the short PCB versions, but that doesn't particularly bother me.

From checking reviews, the 2GB doesn't really seem to be limiting things at 2560x1440, and I could happily drop 4XAA when it does become an issue.

Now just to return dead 7950 and sell the other....
