Hi all I was after yet more network info.

I have a couple of computers and PS3 upstairs and the router is downstairs.

Now the PS3 is wireless thats ok but I would rather it was wired.

Me computer is all so wireless but I have to steal be better half`s dongle to use it.

Now instead of running 2 cables upstairs could I run one and then use a 4 port switch then have two cable from that?.

If I was to do this what kind of performance hit should I expect if any? and I assume the router even though its only using one of its ports to provide two computers it will assign an IP as required two any number of computers from the switch?.

Thanks

No performance hit ping wise unless you are really hammering the device.

If you are transferring large files from multiple devices between 2 switches then you may saturate 100MBit on the uplink port.

Solved easily enough by using 1GBit switches on either end, or a 10/100 with at least a single GBit port for uplink.

That'll be fine. Ping time between that and my modem/router is 0ms. I use it in a similar fashion. Modem/Router upstairs with one cat5e coming down to the Switch, which then feeds my PC and the Xbox360 in the other room downstairs.
