One Canada Square (Canary Wharf Tower) question

Your generlisation is wrong, i am an engineer situated in the wharf, and not a grass or litter engineer :p

Look at me I have a job at Canary Wharf thread

Yup, NER NER NER NERRRR NERRRRR :D

Not bad here, nice views of the sunset over the thames, lots of places to eat, lots of attractive women in sexy work clothes, and also not a bad commute. Well the commute is ok coming in on the DLR, but god forbid you take the Jube in.

Edit: Great, me and Asprilla are posting roughly the same things without even realising. first Home Cine + Hi-fi, now GD. Whatever next :D

I agree about there being something missing it just seems a little too clinical. Plus there is an awful lot of everything missing at the weekend, it's liek aghost town.

Yep, no chance of getting a peep out from the top floor- secuirty there is aiport like.

I work about half way up the tower when I am based in CW (not giving the exact floor :p) and you can easiliy trap yourself between doors if you forget to take your access pass with you. Security are on you in a few mins as they monitor the CCTV!

It's a great place to work, lots of good shops in the shopping centre below and plenty of totty as already mentioned!!!

It's a pity you need a sizable bank balance to woo them. Although in the London paper yesterday, City Girl even commented on Bankers asking her to pay half on a date, or bringing out the vouchers to dinner :D

Bleh...Don't remind me... Took me 30 mins to get from Canada Water to London Bridge this morning and that was after I checked AT THE STATION 2 mins before I went to the platform if there was any delays ("Good Service" it said).

Canary Wharf is not too bad for me given I live at Canada Water so I sometimes go there with friends at the weekend for a meal or for a nice walk along the Thames with the GF and occasionally to the O2 on the other side.

I much prefer working in the City though despite living so near to CW - something about the buildings and small hidden pubs that I love about it (easy to take a view of St Paul's, the river etc for granted too!)

No there is no viewing deck at the top of 1 Canada Square for the public . Bear Sterns used to have the top 2 floors until they went under earlier this year . I has a meeting with a guy calles Barrie Nix one day , pompus little fart who used to own John Lennons old house on the St Georgoes estate in Weybridge , i felt like throwing him off .

Years ago when the wharf was still quite new the top 20 floors of 1 Canada Square were empty for nealry a year . They used to let people up then but when the bomb went off in Marsh Wall in 1996 they stoppd it .

No there isn't, I used to spend a lot of time on the top floor as it used to be owned by Bear Stearns.

Used to sit myself in a corner meeting room and spend the day working looking out over London

I've also been to the top 'no deck' - do you know what the plans are for 'currently under development' Bear Stearns building nr. 1 Canada Sq.?

Shame Bears could'nt get a hand out like the rest - twas good working there.

Yes, I know, but only a small part of the Canary Wharf area is actually finance these days - lots of big names yes...but it's spread out greatly in the last few years and it's not all finance. The job cuts are small - Lehmans was the only really one that was major and it clocked in at a few thousand.

The US is always going to take the brunt of the job losses because of the lax employment laws.

You are kidding right ?

HBOS , Barclays , Morgan Stanley , Credit Suisse to name a few . 2 Major law firms , lehmans until they went pop .

There is also a very large development just been given permission by Tower Hamlets that will make it nealry double the size over the next ten years .

Well, I had my meeting and I couldn't see bugger all out the windows (well a little bit)

We then went up to the top floor afterwards, very little up there. There was no one up there and most of the lights were off. We could see through a small gap to the outside but I couldn't see much at all.

I felt incredibly sick going from ground floor to floor 50 in a matter of seconds. So perhaps it was a good thing I couldn't see out.

Looking at the building from outside I was a bit "meh". It didn't seem that big. Then again I was lucky enough to stand next to the WTC when I visited NY about 8 years ago, maybe that is why.

You are hard to please, I still love just wondering around gawping at the buildings.

Looking out of the office thames towards tower bridge and bank just now, the sunset is stunning :D

That's because Bear Stearns is no more and until JPM decided to remove the kit they have up there it's gotta stay!

Wonder what will happen to the new building Bear were building near Barcap.

No, but i'll find out in a few days as i'm seeing some old contacts from Bear who are now spread all over. Some are with JPMorgan so i'm sure they'll know.

JPMorgan is moving all their City branches to CW so I imagine they might need the extra space over there (in the new ex-Bear building?)

I'm moving out to Canary Wharf for work in the next couple of weeks as the blackfriars office i work in is getting knocked down. Mixed feelings tbh, I liked the Wharf while i was at college for a couple of months earlier in the autumn but the city seems busier and more alive if that makes sense. CW can seem a little bit clinical and sterile at times.

Bugger, just read this:

:(

LOL! I met the guy in the end and was very apologetic. I had cracked his number plate it seemed and I offered to pay the cost of repair. He said not to worry and we had a nice chat. He left the note only because in the last 7 months he has had about 5 people bump, scratch, hit, or generally damage his car :)

I hope you have now stopped bumping into peoples cars.

:p

why do people ahve a stick up their Arse when it come to working in Canary Wharf. Its not a big deal. Half of the kids, who work inputting trades all day barley earn over 20k, and think they are big shots, coz they work on the estate.

That really winds me up. i work in CW and have reletativtly senior position for a guy my age, and have to listen crap all day form thise kids who think they are something special in their M&S suits and TM lewin shirts.

rant over, had a bad day :)

Try going up st pauls cathedral, it has a large viewing area at the base of the dome that should be ok, it's not fully enclosed but it's quite large and you don't have to go anywhere near the edge unless you want to, the outer wall is also quite high:

If you really want a challenge go right to the top, unlike the lower section it was never designed for tourists and can be quite tricky:

Cracking views though:

I used to work on the 40th floor the Swiss Re building (The Gherkin). The views from there were incredible, I rarely go work done!
Now work in Minster Court which unfortunately is dwarfed by surrounding buildings meaning the views aren't as good.
