The tragedy took place following a special night held at the club to raise funds for an exhibition for a local artist, who also works at the venue.

A special spread had been laid on for guests, and after the fund-raising event had finished in the early hours, a number of remaining guests began a light-hearted competition to see how quickly they could eat some of the buffet's fairy cakes.

But the game quickly turned to tragedy when a number of cakes became caught in the throat of one off-duty staff member who was attending the event as a guest.

Colleagues trained in first aid and an off-duty lifeguard rushed to help the victim, but despite their efforts, and that of an ambulance crew which arrived moments later, they could not open his airway.

The victim, who has worked at the venue for more than a year and who hails from the Birmingham area, is thought to have had around five of the cakes lodged in his throat.

Is it weird that the first thing that crossed my mind is how embarrassing that would be?

Imagine it...

'oh crap... I'm going to die by choking on five fairy cakes in front of all these people'

TBH I think all "eat as much as you can" competitions are gross and such a waste of food. It is sad that someone has died - but it's hopefully a step towards people ceasing such stupid pursuits.

Wow poor guy :(

We used to have Flump eating competitions in our sixth form common room. The idea was to see how many you could squeeze into your mouth without actually swallowing them - I think the record was close to 100

No-one ever stopped to think this could actually be quite dangerous...
