Ok I have some spreasheets that I ned tomanipulate and for the life of me I cannot seem to get the data into a format that is useful tome.

Sample of Data:

01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 1.00
01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 0.50
01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 1.00
01/02/2006 - 03/02/2006 3.00
01/02/2006 - 03/02/2006 3.00
01/03/2006 - 01/03/2006 1.00
01/03/2006 - 01/03/2006 1.00
01/04/2006 - 01/04/2006 1.00
01/04/2006 - 01/04/2006 1.00
01/04/2006 - 02/04/2006 2.00
01/05/2005 - 01/05/2005 1.00
01/05/2005 - 01/05/2005 1.00

Date range is all one column (A) and frequency is column B. There are lots more colums but irrelvant to what I need this time around.

I need to be able to work out the frequency for each from the baove, plus 4000 rows more of it. Any ideas?

a pivit table comes to mind. But it will only work if your dates are identical i.e.

01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 
01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 
01/02/2006 - 01/02/2006 
01/02/2006 - 03/02/2006

01/03/2006 - 01/03/2006 
01/03/2006 - 01/03/2006

you can set the table to use the table headings so : date along the top, Names down the side, or vise versis.

the pivit table can be set to do a sum of number of instances per item or in this case date range.

I've probably not explained it well at all but i hope you get a little jist of it.

Yes, a pivot table should be able to do that for you.


The excel help is actually pretty good, if you search for pivot table it should guide you. Failing that, google will throw up tonnes of useful sites. And as a last resort, post up the excel file and I'm sure someone on here can help you out

Had a look at Pivot tables but I couldn't seem to get it to work. Used Excel loads and for some reason just cannot get my skull around this one.

Will have another look now. Can mail someone one of the Excel spreadsheets if they are bored

EDIT: Think I got the Pivot working now, seems I just needed a fresh head on. Cheers
