Truly shocking that the situation hasn't improved. Not only has it not improved it actually seems to have got worse. Labour Home Secretary Charles Clarke lost his job in 2006 over this shambles, we've had more than one Home Secretary since then but none of them have been able to make any progress. What is going wrong?

One in six foreign offenders living in the community have absconded, including 58 dangerous individuals who have been missing since 2010, the National Audit Office has revealed.
The NAO also found that police were failing to conduct overseas criminal record checks on more than two-thirds of arrested foreign nationals.

Paul Houston's 12 year old daughter, Amy, was knocked down and killed in in a hit-and-run incident in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 2003, by an Iraqi Kurd who was banned from driving and had been refused asylum.
He is still in the UK and Mr Houston told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that politicians had "blood on their hands".
"They owe it to society to protect us from dangerous criminals," he said, adding that a "lot of money has been spent" for "very little progress".
