Hi Guys;
I am off to live in China for the next two years and want one more blowout before I go!!

I am looking for a new graphics card and have narrowed it down to:

  1. 1. BFG GeForce GTX 285 OCX 1024MB GDDR3 PCI £356.49

    2. XFX GeForce GTX 295 1792MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI £402.49 offer of the week.

    3. XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 £333.49

I know what some of you are thinking!! wait and get one in china, well I would but:
The exchange rate is crap at the moment.
You cant get top end stuff very easily.

I was also going to have a go at using the 8800gt for physx...

I may also get a new monitor while I am there 28"-30"

If your after PhysX then id get a cheap 280, as the 285 is just one overclocked but a lot dearer, and also not worth it as its dearer than the much faster X2, and the 295 is about on par with the X2, but about £100+ dearer. :)

It's not completely the same, it's die-shrunk and tends to clock better than 280's esp on the shader.

I'd get a cheap 280 from somewhere tbh tho.

From your summary forget the 285 as the others are not much more and are a lot more powerful. Your call really what do you prefer ATI or Nvidia?

oh ryte my bad :p dont know how I missed it tbh!

If it is a blow out tho then go for the fastest....

Though the sensible money is the 4870X2

If your getting the X2, and you want PhysX, then you can still get it, as you can use your old 8800 GT alongside the X2 as a PhysX card, but you can only do that in XP or Win 7. :)

4870x2 comes with dx10.1 too, which nvidia cards dont use. Blizard are ment to be supporting this with there new games, so others should follow suit.

Would have recomended a 295, but its pricing is just stupidly high for how much of a diffrence there is from an x2. So get that if you have more money then sence :)

Ok guys this is what I have gone for, ordered today.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail £289.99

Coolermaster Real Power 850w Modular Power Supply £104.99

DHL @ Home Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri): £8.99
VAT: £60.60
Order Total: £464.57

I decided to opt for the x2 as suggested and spend some cash on a new PSU. this one seemed to get good reviews.

I was a bit miffed at the £8.99 delivery after spending over £450 but what can you do.

Just a quick note: I had the boys check out prices in China today:
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB £367.99 inc VAT OCUK
Same card in China 4000rmb @ todays exchange rate £400 + £10 delivery + credit card surcharge 10% ...... £450 at the door..China is not cheap any more!!
the exchange rate has gone from 14 - £1 to 10 - £1 in the last 7 months. I would expect thing to start getting very expensive here very soon....You have been warned...:(

Thanks for the help, I have already off loaded my old PSU and GPU so have in effect got the PSU for £30..... that will do....;)

Thanks for the help great response as usual....:)
