This could be an annoyingly difficult question for most - but, if you were only allowed one lens on your body, and was a fixed prime, which would you go for? I suppose a simple way would be to look at the focal range you quite often use on average.

Money no object, also, so whilst something like the 50mm 1.8 is a good value for money lens, don't discount the L range. So, how about a 24mm 1.4 / 35mm 1.4 or even a 200mm 2.0 but bear in mind you would have to use just this one lens for a year (in theory).

This was just a thought that popped into my head and I actually found the answer to be incredibly difficult. Any takers?

edit - I now realise how this thought entered my mind, subconsciously following on from Raymonds thread, Rome but only using a prime for the trip. Hmmmm.

28 f/1.8 I guess. On a crop sensor it's pretty much 50mm...

Not perfect bt any means but it would give you the most options for most people (portraits, landscapes, town etc).

On a full frame I'd probably go for a 50 f/1.4 though. Not the f/1.2 because I couldn't justify the extra size. For the same reason as above.

I personally would happily stick a Sigma 30mm f1.4 on my cropped body all day long. That said, my 85mm f1.8 is on 90% of the time since I got it!

You buy me a 50mm f/1.2 and I'll happily use it for a year. :D

I assume I would be allowed to make use of extension tubes?

Could live without telephoto capabilities as long as I could still macro.

I use the 17 TSE, 24, 35, 50 and 85.1.2. The 85 is by far my favourite, but i really wouldnt want to choose just one :(

I find that I use my 50mm 1.8 about 75% of the time. I generally find it to be perfect for the crop sensor, with general walk around photos. Depending on what you have in mind when you take photos, or your style I'd say, money no option, 50mm 1.2 or the 35L as mentioned. A 200mm lens is fine (and I'm getting one next month!) but that would limit you no end. I'd say cheat and take that and the 35mm :D

Well at the moment I'm like ElDude using my 50/1.8 most of the time as its just sooo much better than kit lens. Saying that its a bit too long on crops so I'd say a 35/f1.4 or if I had the money the 35L

Probably the Sigma 30mm f 1.4 for me as well. I think myself and Mr Jones are going to have a fall out over the next one that comes up for sale on TP! :D

I suppose 28mm would be a "jack of all trades" for me with my 1.6x crop factor, but then indeed it is a master of none. Tempted to say something daft like 135mm L and just shoot detail everywhere!

I'm with feriso, been using 50m 1.8 a lot but would like a little less zoom, imagine a 35L would be perfect (if money was no object lol)

I don't know if I could choose between 35mm or 50mm, probably 35mm just so I could do some landscapes as well.

Leica M9 with Summilux 35mm would be it for me.

I've been camping for the past 2 months, waiting for 1!
I might be short on money though with Mum's birthday just gone, anniversary to come and Christmas next month. Bah! I'll get it before Summer 2011, even if it's brand new from Kerso (£330)

35L for 5D2 and 50mm Summilux for M9. I've been using the 35L on the 5D for a year now and it is my 'go to' lens for most things as I love the perspective, sharpness and size. 50 mm Summilux for the M9 as 50mm just feels 'right' for a RF and theres no 50mm out there that can top a Summilux in terms of quality and sharpness :)

35L for 5D2

Exactly !
