One M8 or S5

Yeah, some of Samsung products are just amazing, their high end laptops for example, TVs. Then you look at the S5 and it just lazy and boring, I think there finally taking it a tad more serious with the Alpha and Note 4.

M8.

S5 for features, but M8 for design. So M8 wins for me.

Also the position of the power button is less of an issue because you can double tap the screen on or flick upwards to unlock.

it seems there is an updated version of the m8 out next week with a 13mp camera. It's called the "HTC one m8 eye"

M8 for definite
The S5 is basically bloatware, if you root it you solve the problem but otherwise so much crap on there

Go into a store and have a play with both and decide, both are great devices and you won't be disappointed with either.

Thats exactly the issue with the S3 I tried a few years back. just too overcrowded with crap.

Rooting isn't an issue but I could never get my head around flashing rom's. :(

Unfortunately I'm no where near a store to have a play with one.

In your position I'd discount both and look at either the Sony Z3 or LG G3. I have the latter and I'm very pleased with it.

Flashing roms is actually very simple.
I have the M8 and it took about 5 minutes to flash.

I flash an update every few months and takes around half hour all in all (to put all apps back on and everything)

I'm lucky if I get 6/7 hours out of my M8 with only around 2 hours screen on time.

It takes an absolute age to charge too. Other than that it's an outstanding phone.

Not sure I've ever got 6 hours but I usually get 3-4 hours over 36-48 hours of use. It also charges pretty quickly. Sounds like maybe Antony101's battery is borked?

M8, even if the phones were exactly the same in everyway and the only difference was software I would choose the M8 because imo Sense is massively superior to Touchwiz.

Touchwiz is laggy, ugly and full of Samsungs bloat apps. Sense on the other hand is a much lighter interface, looks much better and is buttery smooth and HTC have been brilliant with updates to latest versions of Android and have promised L within 90 days to current M8 owners and M7 owners.

The camera is just ok, it does the job but the speakers on the One are for a phone awesome.
