One Undershaft

I actually think the Shard looks quite nice and has character. The Gherkin isn't traditional, but certainly iconic now; it's grown on me.

I think out of the buildings in that area, the two I really dislike are the Lloyds building and the Cheese-grater.

really? I think the Lloyds one is fantastic - much older than the others yet still looks very modern.

The Gherkin is cool to look at from outside but is a massively inefficient use of space - still has all the plant stuff in the centre so the office space is confined to ring shapes with the occasional pizza slice cut out of them to make way for atriums.

It looks like a nightmare from a Pink Floyd video. I just don't like it.

I agree on your points about the Gherkin though. :p

I worked in the Gherkin for a few years, the novelty wore off within the first week, there is an overpriced bar and restaurant at the top you can bring your mates or a date to... If you're near a window then for about an hour or so each day you get the sun shining directly on your monitor and you can't see anything.

A bunch of hipster food wagons turn up every Thursday though which adds some variety to lunch - muscles and chips, soft shell crab burgers etc.. They also seem to get random bits of 'art' installed outside.

Undershaft?

Sounds like a government word used to screw the public without them being aware they are being screwed by the government.

"City of London's tallest tower"

"the 73-storey tower could be the second highest column in the capital"

Am I missing something?

The Shard is higher but it's not technically in the City (suburb) as it's in Southwalk across the water.

It's The City, pop outside and get some lunch out. The change of scenery will make you more focused in the afternoon and the food around is excellent. Ladenhall market is a 5 minute walk.

Anyway, I thought this thread was about one's undershaft.

By the capital they're referring to the City of London + 32 London Boroughs.... 'London' technically contains two Cities(City of London and City of Westminster) and a bunch of towns within its borders

the Shard is the tallest in 'London' but is located in the borough of Southwark not in the City of London

fun fact the City of London is actually the third smallest city in the UK

'London' as in the large metropolis isn't technically a city in its own right but is an English region

Ah right, did wonder if "City" was referring to a specific part.

Yeah, have a read of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London

The City is a city within the city of London. It's actually got it's own police force. Whereas the London Metropolitan have jurisdiction over the rest of London, the City of London is served by City of London police.

Seems to be an historical anarchism more than anything really.

The City also effectively dies as soon as the weekend roles around, it's quite bizarre.
