O'neil leaves Aston villa?

Imagine if Moyes had the money MON has had, Everton would be deffo top 4
I fully believe that to be true. If Moyes had half the kitty of some of the bigger teams we'd certainly be right up there challenging for the Champions League. Hell, with the squad we've got now we could be challenging had it not been for the horrendous injury list at the start of the season.

How much has MON actually spent in the past 4 years?

These are what I can remember:

Friedel - £3m
L.Young - £3m
Sidwell - £5m
Dunne - £5m
Downing - £12m
Young - £10m
Milner - £12m
Carew - Swap for Baros
Davies - £8m
Delph - £5.5m
Salifou - 38p
Heskey - £3m
Beye - TOO BLOODY MUCH
Cuéllar - £8m
Warnock - £6m?
Collins - £4m

Those aren't exact figures by the way. That's at least £85m there, but that's not a *huge* amount for what, 15 players?

He has spent around £84m net which sounds quite a lot but Lerner only paid £64m for the club. Villa's squad was no where near the standard of Spurs or Liverpool when he took over and they have spent much more heavily than Villa.

And that's entirely my point, he has been constrained by his budget in how to put together a team to challenge for a Champions League spot.

I think he's done OK. He has spent a lot of money for a side that has never played CL football (you can add Reo-Coker @ ~£8m to the above list) but for the most part I think he has bought wisely and personally I think their squad is comfortably a top 8 side (i.e. I view that there are 8 teams capable of qualifying for europe, and the league table actually reflects that top 8, although not necessarily in order of how good they are now)

I've heard it said that Villa don't have the squad to compete at the top level, but in my view, it's almost the opposite. They DO have a very good squad, thanks to all his 'middling' buys, just not many cutting edge superstars that you see at the likes of Chelsea or MU. I'd say in terms of depth of squad Villa are up there with most t

................Friedel
Cuellar...Dunne...Collins...Warnock
A.Young...Milner...Barry...Downing
...........Carew...Agbonlahor

......................Guzan
L.Young...Davies......Bouma...Shorey
Delph....Reo-Coker...Petrov....Sidwell
.............Harewood...Heskey

Now that's not a world class second XI but what would, say, Arsenal field against it?

..........................Fabianski
Eboue........Campbell.......Silvestre.........Gibbs
Walcott...Ramsey....Denilson...Wilshere..Rosicky
..........................Eduardo

Actually to be fair I'd probably take Arsenal's 2nd XI over them, so I'll shut up now.

2 problems here..
1) Barry doesn't play for us any more :p
2) Cuéllar can't play RB. He's shockingly bad there so we need cover. L.Young isn't bad but MON doesn't seem to like playing him. He's good going forward and gets back quickly enough.

Bouma's getting on a bit and has been out for 18 months with a horrible ankle injury but he's a strong LB so you could maybe play L.Young - Cuéllar/Davies - Dunne - Bouma in defence. Reo-Coker's fallen out with the manager and is probably out the door. Petrov's our captain, so he shouldn't be the "second XI". Sidwell's off, Delph needs time to mature (gets booked a lot too!), Heskey's Heskey and Harewood's a goon.

Guzan I rate actually, will be a good replacement for Friedel when he retires.

God knows why I've put Barry in there, LOL :)

Petrov can take his place, Delph can move back inside and I'll promote Albrighton to the 2nd XI, he has impressed me at times.

He's very good for his age. Ciaran Clark's one to keep an eye on as well. Played against Fulham earlier in the year and was awarded MotM on his debut at 20, his only appearance to date though.
