O'Neill to take over at West Ham

Makes sense I suppose given that MON is probably the highest calibre they could hope for, I saw an interview with AG after their last match and he looked and sounded like a dead man walking.

Yeah, I definitely reckon West Ham have the better end of the deal here but I think they will be prepared to back O'Neill in this transfer window. I can't imagine he'd be taking over otherwise. I do still think West Ham's squad is far better than the other relegation contenders though so even with what he has they should stay up.

One of the Guardian Journo's tweeted that he'd spoken to a senior board member who said it won't be today.

One loss from 7 games is hardly bad though, I'll be dissapointed if it does happen because Grant's been treated like ****.

No team has had West Ham's injury situation in the past year, Zola was great there, ultimately no manager can keep the team playing well or as high as previously when the team is that smegged and the owners are utterly bankrupted by recession as happened to them.

I think Zola and Grant are getting utterly screwed by the new idiots in charge. Zola had to put up with a bunch of signings out of his control who were past it big names who didn't help in the slightest and completely the opposite of what was needed. Now they've done the same to Grant, 80-95k a week depending on reports, for Bridge, who hasn't stayed fit for more than a few games at a time in years now, for a club still in heavy debt.

Owners wanted a name, not the right player.

On top of that Grants results have been improving, they were ranked 20th of all teams in August, 18th in October, and since then I think 14-16th in the past 3 months. Thats form throughout the month, so they are basically gaining points that would see them finish 15th-ish at the moment, yet results are still improving, more players are getting back to form and the team is playing better.

O'neill won't take the same crap other managers might take, he'll threaten to quit publically until the pratt's in charge stop medling so he might be just what West Ham need.

SSN Breaking news earlier: "West Ham senior source tells us Avram Grant's future to be decided this week"

No **** sherlock. I could be their senior souce and tell them that.

I don`t get it.

Why is Martin O'Neil such a popular choice as a manager?

What exactly has he done in the game to make so highly regarded?

Not the biggest Grant fan but he seems to at least be handling the situation with dignity in stark contrast to everything going on around him.

However even if MON has pulled the plug it still puts Grant in an awkward situation, he knows people at the club want to get rid of him but has to keep going until they find someone else to take over, meanwhile facing constant press speculation about his future.

Give me your reasoning behind that.

Certainly, I'm glad you asked. Mr O'Neill had a win record at Celtic of 75%, won 3 out of a possible 5 SPL titles, won 3 Scottish Cups, won 1 Scottish League Cup, had 7 consecutive wins in Old Firm matches and came the closest to winning the UEFA Cup (or any European Cup for that matter) with a Scottish club in 20 years.

I'll be honest, before I looked it up I didn't know that his win percentage at Celtic was so high, I figured anything about 60-65% would be about the average for an Old Firm manager.

Now you can say that Rangers were comparatively poor during that period, that Martin O'Neill spent a lot of money, that his teams don't play attractive football and all those things may be true to greater or lesser extents (although Rangers had hardly been a model of frugality going into that period) but you can only beat what is in front of you and he did that, regularly.

It's worth also noting that in the UEFA Cup Final he was beaten by Jose Mourinho and there's no great shame in that considering his record. There's some interesting parallels you can draw between the two men - strong characters, often criticised for playing unattractive/defensive countering football, like to have a good amount of transfer money to succeed with, build teams from the back based on a strong defence, often choose players who are big/strong and play a physically imposing game.
