Hi, after cooking with onions I always get this hideous smell of powerful onion on my fingers. And its not my breath btw.

Anything I can do to get rid of the smell? Soap doesn't do anything.

Thanks!

A slice of fresh lemon rubbed on the stinky fingers should counter-act the stinky onion whiff

As above. Lemon juice or stainless steel works. Orange juice even works to some extent. You also need to wash your hands in cold water afterwards as if you use hot water the juice cooks into your skin. Same goes for garlic.

you can even buy some "steel soap" if this is a reoccurring issue...very useful after chopping garlic

I have one of these and it works a treat. It's no different than using any other stainless steel of course, but due to its shape it's easier to use (also has a wee bit for doing under your nails). Use it with cold running water.

Stainless Steel indeed. Always used to find that amusing when seeing the expensive versions in the mail order catalogues.
Figured if it bothered me that much I'd just rub my hands with the back of a spoon. :D

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who suffers from this.
Everytime I cut an onion my fingers smell of it for around 7 days. I have some strong hand cleaners for work and they don't touch it so those steel soaps sound interesting.

When I used to work at a fishmongers, I couldn't find ANYTHING to get the rid of the smell off my hands. I tried hot water, lemons, chlorine tablets (lol) and a combination of all three! Various soaps and detergents.... but the next morning I'd always smell like trout. Rank.

Don't recall ever trying steel soap, but maybe i'll give it a go after reading this :P

So is this an issue with a select few people? I don't seem to have this problem. I can wash off the smell easily enough.

I reckon pores may have a big influence. Because my hands were wet a lot of te time, i think that would have meant the pores on my hands would have been "more open", therefore letting the fishy stench get deeper into my skin.

Just a theory anyway!

The irony is, the best way to get rid of the smell of the fish is to chop onions.

So my steel soap just turned up so I tested it by chopping three cloves of garlic for a quick marinade. Quick rub of the soap on my fingers under cold running water and the smell is no more! Will chop an onion closer to dinner time.

Soap is not solid by the way but feels solid.
