new system launching in next week
Onkyo HT-S5105 5.1 Channel Home Entertainment Receiver / Speaker package (Black)
AV receiver + speakers. approx £350

what are your thoughts on this?
i need to get a surround sound set up for my place - mainly used for movies (DVDS & Blu rays) and sports (normal sky sports) with a bit of PS3 gaming
I know it hasn't got HD audio on this system but how important is that feature and am I losing out much not having it?
thanks

Got a link to what the speakers etc look like?
Does it have HD audio pass through though?

There's the Sony HT-SF1300 (£300) with nice looking speakers on stands etc which can accept HD audio. If you're watching Blurays through the PS3, the PS3 will decode the HD audio.

well if you go for the Onkyo HTX22HD Integrated amp/speaker system it has all the sounds including the hd format sounds and if you look around you can get the 2.1 for £250 and another £100 for the centre and back 2 speakers to make it 5.1 and it suppose to be a cracking system

it does have HDMI Passthrough.
am I right in thinking that if the PS3 decodes HD audio and then playing it through HDMI Pass through will make no difference to the sound?

You won't notice the difference between standard audio, and HD sound on such a low end system. Instead of trying to get HD audio decoding, buy better stuff.

Onkyo = well-specced cheap but usually output furnace-like heat and look like gash.

I would register overat AVforums and scour their For Sale section for used hardware, as you'll get MUCH more for your money and usually the kit ha been looked after like their own children (and lets face it, audio hardware generally staye in one place untouched anyway).

What is your maximum potential budget? I mean the absolute maximum you can afford to spend on the system, not "what you would like to spend", which is usually considerably lower and results in long-term regret.
