Hi there,

Just setup my shiny new Onkyo 605 and to get a decent level of sound ive found im using atleast a setting of 65-70 out of 100. Is it normal to require pretty much 3/4 of the available power to get an acceptable level of sound? I was expecting to find that at 1/2 power it would be far to loud, however it would seem this is not the case.

Opinions?

Ta,

Well I used the auto-setup mic thing to get me started, this is my first time with a "proper" amp so will have to delve into the menu`s and see what I can find.

Cheers.

I have a denon 2307 amp and i also used the mic to set it up at first but didnt like the way it set the speaker levels to low meaning i had to crank the volume up loads to get good volume.

nice amp btw

Dunno mine runs about 40 for quietish listening, and pump it up to about 60 or so for movies dependant on source though.

these amp's, when calibrated with the mic, are calibrated to reference level. this means that when the amp is set to 0db (please change the settings volume display : relative rather than absolute), sound will peak at 105db in the listening position (115db for the subwoofer).

people who dont like 'cranking the amp up' dont really understand whats going on. the whole point is to calibrate the amp to hear exactly what those nice people mastering those dolby and dts soundtracks what you to hear. reference level-calibrated amps play at exactly the volume they are supposed to. its so you know its set up exactly how it should be.

on my onkyo 805, -30db is a good level to listen to music to. -10 is sodding loud. reference level...well.....think *night club loud*

it wont be 3/4 of the available power to the amp. it wouldnt be anywhere near that. dont think of the volume control as a linear control that scales with power output, it doesnt work like that, its logarithmic scale and so the incres from -30db to -20db is greater than the increase from -40db to -30db. it makes *much* more sense when working with a db display

I listened to what you said so i thought id go back and setup my denon 2307 amp with the mic again i must have done something wrong when i first set the thing up because it sounds much better with those setting.

maybe i was to eager to get the thing up and running.

thanks.

Don't bother with the setup mic...all you need to do is set the speaker distances correctly to ensure any necesssary delays are correct :)

I have a 605-related question too if I'm allowed....it does 120W/channel and my speakers are B&W 685s which are rated @ 100W - what's the safest maximum volume to use (assuming loud music's being played)? I'm guessing 80 - 90 or so.

cant agree with that, sorry. Audyssey room correction does a lot more than just set up speaker delays.

safe is just before the point of whatever gives out first, your hearing or the speakers lol

Cheers for that James, makes much more sense now.

Just waiting on my HD-EP35 to complete the new setup now :)

I have mine set to 40-55 normally but some hd dvds for example are super low sound for eg happy feet and i have to turn it up to 65/70 ish. just remember to turn it down :D

And crossover/levels then :( Oh and EQ adjustments maybe

What else? I'm guessing it sets other things that can't be fiddled with in the menu. Time to read the manual probably...and figure out how to turn it off, then on, and generally fiddle around.

Thought as much :D

hehe. well the audyssey 2eq on the 605 eq's all the main channels as flat as possible, set's the gains on all channels and the distances as well. it does other clever trickery also but thats the main gist of it:)

you'll love the amp, im sure of it hehe

Funky :)

Already got it, arrived the other week :D

Same here, 60 - 70 for movies with 70 getting bit to loud when things start to hot up! Thats in a 20 x 10 foot room.
I thought , hang on this should be louder at 50, so i turned ut up slowly then found but 80-90 is just to loud! ( well apart from playing hero 2! )

With my 605 60 on DTS films is bloody loud, and that's using all the settings the setup mic gave me, apart from the sub as it set it to -10db and I could barely hear the bass i've now set it to -2db and it's nice and boomy on films (i.e. room shaking stuff :) )
