Onkyo Experiences? - now with trouble!

Hi, I've just entered into the AV world and have ordered an Onkyo TX-SR608, I was keen on the 607, but a rush to my local Richer Sounds ended in leaving with nothing as the had one display model and one customer return, both missing accessories (rushed up after special offer email).
This gave me the taste and I found the 608 for a good price, paid my money so I hope it turns up!
I was interested in Sony AV amps too, but the Onkyo had good features per pound.
Does anyone have good/bad experiences with Onkyo priducts? All welcome but specifically the 607/8?

Thanks

yeah, I'm going to start 2.1 and take it from there when funds allow, it's going to be for music from pc too, via optical/coxial. I know it's a compromise, but as ever space/money dictates things. The last time I was into separates was about 10 years ago.....

Edit - Speaker recomendations welcome!

I've got the TX-SR805 which is a few years old now but I've loved mine. Got it set up with Kef 3005.2's and enjoy it very much !

Their kit is very well specced and usually has all the features you could want and usually wouldn't get without spending a lot more money. Actual sound quality isn't as good as better kit though but still respectable.

i really like mine, just dont trust the "set up mic" too much.

I used mine to to get it roughly set up then played around myself to get it just right.

I've got the 607 and am very happy with it indeed. Does everything I need it to and sounds fantastic, is easy to use and offered good value for money when compared the price/spec of similar units. It doesn't seem to get particularly hot either, which is a plus for me because it's in quite a confined space. By no means the best, but fantastic starter/mid kit for the price - just make sure you get speakers to match it :)

I have an 807, which replaced an aging Denon. Sound quality wise, I guess it is a little subjective. I run mine with KEF KHT2005.2 for AV and 2 sets of Kef Ci130 inwalls in my dining room and conservatory and love the sound that I get. For my music and film tastes it suits me fine. For playing my XBox it is awesome, you can hear people sneaking up on you in BC2 and I can track the chopper flying round my living room.

Downsides with Onkyo amps - they run HOT and need plenty of ventilation. Would I buy another Onkyo amp, hell yes in the bat of an eyelid.

My only other comment is dont judge it out of the box. These amps need quite a bit of setting up. Read the manual (shock horror, I know we blokes dont do that), take your time and with a little work, you can make these amps shine.

I was thinking about getting a onkyo 607 when i get some money saved up together with some tannoy F1s. Pretty glad to gear a lot of positive responses to the onkyo

I have a 606, which suffers from overheating, drop outs and volume instability. The hdmi daughterboard failed twice, the remote is unresponsive. All common problems.

I will never buy another, I'll stick wirh Denon and Pioneer for my next one.

Thanks for the interestig replies. I bought it as it seemed the best value/features, I was considering a Sony STRDN1000 or the STRDA2400ES both for £300 Richer Sounds, but when I found the latest Onkyo for a good price then I made the choice.
It's often tough as you rely on reviews and opinions and when you get it home it would take quite a lot to hate it enough to send it back.

I've heard the Onkyo's tend to run hot, the 608 actually has a cooling fan! But the reviews say they sound good and rate better than the Sony STRDN1000, the 2400ES is meant to sound really good, but is a couple of years old so lacks a few of the latest features.

Hopefully it arrives ok, I was a bit skeptical due to the low price, but will wait and see.
Now it's down to choosing the speakers......

same as above have a 607 run mine with a pair of mordaunt 902s and a alumni sub in a 2.1 setup and love it to bits :) sure its not the most flashy of systems and theres better performing kit out there for the money but the onkyo is a tasty bit of kit and i wont here a bad word against it, although it does run bloody hot :)

oh if your local to glasgow and want to here my setup with the mordaunt setup give me a shout :)

Love my 607 running it with

Roth Oli 3 fronts
Roth Oli 1 Rears
Roth Oli 2CS Center
BK Gemmini II Sub sounds great for movies and music isnt as bad as i was expecting

in two days i would have had my 805 for 3 years. probably the best (though expensive!) bit of kit i've ever bought. never skipped a beat or caused any problems what so ever :)

I've had my 875 for around 2 years now. Although people say they run very hot, mines about as warm as i would expect such a beast.

Been great so far!
