Does anyone use any of the online gambling houses and play for real money ? Personally I am not a gambler but I would be intrigued to know what peoples experiences of them are and are they addictive or just harmless fun. How do they compare to the real thing. I subscribe to a few computer mags and they always seemd to be stuffed with leaflets for Poker or Texas Hold Em Etc

My girlfriends dad is nevber off gambling websites, online poker and all that stuff. He plays for money and......well I've never known him win, let me put it like that.

I play online poker, but I steer clear from the casinos. It is possible to make money from casinos (there was a Casino thread a while back) but it mainly envolved using bonuses and playing blackjack to meet a wagering requirment for ages using an odds table. IIRC, some people made a lot of money from this.

I'd recommend poker however as it is much more enjoyable IMO, and if you teach yourself to play a disciplined game you will profit in the long run. I don't see it as gambling in the conventional sense. Myself and my housemate both use it to make money (we're students). I've made around $1500-$2000 profit in a few months, but he puts me to shame with his $4500+ profits. It's relatively easy to be successful, like I said, you just need to be disciplined and know how to play at a fairly decent level.

I play a little online poker at Willhill and the occasional bet on sport at Ladbrooks/Willhill.

It can be a little addictive but then I usually play the bigger multi-table tourneys and your able to have up to 2 hours of entertainment for about £2.50 with the chance of winning £200 for first or your money back if your in the top 10% (it scales down depending on your position)

Can't see how it's any different from renting a DVD to watch or doing any other activity for fun as long as you only ever play with money you can afford to loose. I'm nowhere near good enough to expect to win (thou I have the odd moment) so I class it as entertainment.

Real thing is much better imho, nothing beats actually seeing/interacting with the people your playing against be it friends of whatever but playing online does help with RL poker and theres not always the chance to play your mates when you fancy a game.

I use the FHM/Victor Chandler poker, which is great fun. Never mess with Casino's though.

I have never made any real money from it, but have been playing and enjoying it for about 2 years on and off and overall am £10 down, now thats value for money.

Whats the difference between the Casions and someone like FHM or Victor Chandler for example. Do they only play poker. Never known how to play that game yet

there are bags of thread on online gambling in GD, including one which is massive iirc, might be worth having a look for them, some of them have some good info in :]

I used to play blackjack at the online casinos and made £1000 in ten weeks thanks to the various bonuses they would offer for deposits. I really should try it again, I could do with that kind of money.

Nowadays I just play poker online every now and then. I'm not a great player, but when I play in sit and go tournaments (10 players) I very rarely finish outside the money thanks to playing premium hands and not wasting money chasing stupid hands. I've ordered myself a book from Amazon which I hope will help me improve to a level where I can start making myself a decent income on the side by playing a couple of hours a night.

All this online and "remote" gambling chat still reminds me of the Simpsons episode:

Homer picks up phone and dials a number
"Hello, is that Vegas?"
"$50 on Red"
Pauses for a couple of seconds
"D'oh!"

How can you be in any way sure you're not being totally scammed?
Just recently there were stories about people who were manipulating online gambling by all getting into the same "room" so they all knew what each other had and then taking the other poor sap to the cleaners.

I play some poker and have accounts with various bookies. Imo you need to read as much objective info as you can and make up your own mind, it's your money after all. Any info you get from players is going to be tainted with their experience.

Before you load in any money, make sure you understand the T&C's of the site/s, then decide for yourself if it's worth risking or not.

I think the likes of William Hill and victor Chandler are names you can trust nto to be scamming you.

As for people joining the same room so they can force a win then this is very possible however will only work for a limited time, due to the fact that these sort of companies have very clever software looking for people that play together all the time, win together and bet in similar fashion.

Indeed. There was a small article about it in the latest issue of the WPT Magazine, where it said that all the main online poker places are constantly upgrading their software to look out for people doing this, and of course if they're found, banning them permanantly.

they also have a lot of staff looking out for it, i know someone who was working for pokerstars monitoring teaming on tables.

I'm about 5k up since late january. I've been very lucky (3k) on one playing Black Jack. I play poker too but only for fun, £20 has lasted me an age on that.

I've done it for my family and friends too, probably over 2k this year in total. Really helped me and them a lot. Only problem is I'm starting to use my own money a bit this month. Really gotta stop this. Not a place I want to be.

EDIT
Urghhh, sorry for bringing this back up, didn't realise it was old :(

I play blackjack and poker online, its hit and miss and you normally get a win round then about 3 no wins then a win and a win.

I won £167 last weekend, put £40 on Portsmouth Newcastle Bolton and West Ham to win, West Ham was in play betting on skybet and I got 10/3 with 20 mins to go, 4 mins later after putting the bet on west ham score. I jumped around the room like I was a cockney

I hate bookies as the are full of tramps and are smoked filled. I just bet online its so easy but so tempting, unless you have a day limit on, I wanted to put £50 on Portsmouth Newcastle Bolton but I could only put £25 on, I was gutted.

Back when I was earning money + could afford it, I did the odd online casino bonus thing, go out and try making as much as you could con blackjack etc, though I did end up making a reasonable amount of money, I did lose a similar amount overall.

To do that and make money, you've got to be either very patient, or very lucky. You've also got to accept that you will win, but also lose, and make sure you set yourself a limit and never go over that limit. Self control the main thing.

Never as fun as the real thing in a casino though... though last time I went I lost £50, and also had the worst random piece of bad luck I've had. Asked a friend to pick a number between 0-36, she picks 25. I thne proceed to sit down at the electronic roulette, stick my tenner in the machine, put £1 on 25, and then what I presumed was a confirm button, but it was actually the return money button. As my money comes out, 25 rolled up on the wheel.... gutted.

I started playing online poker. Quickly stopped. Ended up £50 down and i thought i was above average at poker and a patient player. Cards just didn't role for me.

Another OCUK poker torny is due though. Came 8th last time out of 42 i want to come top five!

i started the casino thing about a year ago, made about £3k from it, but haven't played them in a while.

had a little dabble at poker, but that is more 'fun' than profit orientated.

The casino was totally BJ/power VP, and the BJ can be VERY frustrating.
