Activision has been hinting that it might be bringing "online monetization" strategies and business models to other core franchises than World of Warcraft ever since the Blizzard/Activision merger. Now, the publisher has suggested it could be coming to Call of Duty specifically.

Speaking at the BMO Capital Markets Conference last week (via Joystiq), Activision's CFO Thomas Tippl mentioned Call of Duty specifically when quizzed about whether it would apply WoW's online business model to other franchises.

"It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay," Tippl said.

"I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty," he continued.

According to Tippl there is a specific and strong demand for online business models among gamers - information which is probably drawn from a survey Activision did earlier this year.

Things like, oh i dunno, official dedicated servers. It's already been proven that at least some of the code for a dedi server is indeed hidden away somewhere in the game, the question is why have they not made it available. The cynic in me reckons it'll become paid content.

Indeed.

I will take my gaming elsewhere :).

Non free dedicated servers is better than non. I just hope they don't start selling uber weapons for money.

no its not , were used to dedicated server code for free.

it wouldnt work anyway enough people wouldnt be willing to pay a fee for it, someone would just leak the server code like with WOW so.....

an MMO COD would be cool though

Jesus money hungry bunch of ***** basically, makes me want to stop playing WoW but one subscription is nothing to them. This is getting stupid.

I wonder if his name really is Tommy Tippl, or if he's using a stage name for fear he'll have things thrown at him in public :D

That actually made me lol - "you gits! you stingy money grabbing *****! What? Oh yeah, here's my sub for WoW, thanks!"

They're a business trying to make money. You can hardly blame them.

However, I am going to blame them, *******s!

yea because they dont make enough money from a buisness model that has worked for around 40 years now.

they probably really meant microtransactions , buy uniforms , guns , gun upgrades , and all the other crap horriblew rubbish that comes with paying for DLC

There was a few screenshots in the other CoD MW2 thread about payment options they were considering like extra map packs for a monthly fee so I wouldn't be surprised if they added things like extra ranks and perks as part of it.

It's the kind of game that would be ideal for micro-transactions with gamers paying extra for ranks/perks or extra slots for classes.

Wow I didn't know blizzard and activision had merged! So wait, that means that **** that said "I want to take the fun out of making games" is actually something to do with the games blizzard makes now too?

Greedy ****s pretty much sums these guys up. I guess 40 for a game nowadays is cheap ? LOL.

I bet if a new FPS similar to COD/MOH/etc was to come out right now and be semi decent with dedicated servers, there would be a mass exodus from COD. If I had a suitable game to replace it, I wouldn't buy another COD game at all.
