Hi guys,

Just after some opinions.

I have recently got involved with WoW that I enjoy very much. However, there are a few other titles that keep me wondering as to whether I would enjoy them better but only want to concentrate on 1.

They are: -

Lord Of The Rings online
The Age Of Conan - Due out in May.

I appreciate that no one can really comment on Conan as it's not yet out but I must say it looks quite special but what is LOTR like?

What would you do? Carry on with WoW knowing that is the best game or change to one of the others?

As a hardcore WoW player (not so much anymore), I tried LOTRO and I just couldn't get into it. I don't know why. I don't know if it's because I'm too used to WoW.... It's not just LOTRO though, it seems to be any other MMO I try, I just can't get into them.

I think WoW is the best current MMORPG out.

I'd have to agree with you. Won't go back to it though consumed far too much of my time to ever play it again. :D

You could probably find a Gold Edition of LoTRO for a tenner on the 'Bay. So you'll get 45 days play time from that plus a 7 day free trial if you do one first. Plenty of time to give it a good go and see if you like it or not.

Personally I got bored of WoW after I got a Hunter and Mage to 60 and about a months worth of raiding, never been back. LoTRO is slower going but if you're a fan of the setting you will probably enjoy the PvE questing that the game provides.

As you mention AoC why not just wait a few weeks to see if there's an open beta a couple of weeks before launch and then decide?

I don't know if I should give LOTRO another try.

Can anybody recommend a fun class to play? I'd probabaly end up picking the most boring class, maybe that's why last time I couldn't get into it.

At the moment I'm trying out a Loremaster, Guardian and Captain and funnily enough the class I enjoy the most is the tank (Guardian) and I never really play a tank class in MMOG's.

Maybe that's why I like it, because it's completely new to me though. My least favourite are probably the Minstrel and Captain just because of their shout skills, I really don't like the sound effects. The Captain's pet is pretty weak as well and seems a bit useless at the moment but I'm probably just not used to using it.

My mate enjoys the Champion because they're a pretty good melee DPS class.

I'm doing what I recommended, I bought a cheap Gold box and will probably play it until AoC comes out and then decide which I enjoy the most. Or maybe just be content with the WAR beta and not continue with either.

Meh... I just might wait till AOC comes out. :(

If you're thinking of AoC then I'd personally wait around 6 months. Funcom are notorious for releasing games that aren't ready.

LOTRO is a fun game the Books are very engrossing. You also get to see all of the characters from the film and go on missions with them. The storyline as you can imagine is top notch.

If you want to solo I'd play a Hunter. If you want to get into every raid / group quest then I'd play a Minsteral.

Oh, you'd be amazed at how many people can comment on it :p

For LOTRO, I found the minstrel, guardian, champion and burglar classes pretty boring. Captain, loremaster and hunter are nice and varied. Captains in particular are real all-rounders, and don't really have a comparable class in any other mmo. Hunters are lots of fun too, but everyone and their dog plays one, usually called Legorlis or whatever other mis-spelling of the name they could get away with.

LOTRO PvE is awesome but it is very limited at end game, most people in my guild had a max level character of nearly every class as all you can do at end game is start again with a new alt really.

You could alternatively raid - that's quite fun if you get a decent leader.

The update is just around the corner (Mines of Moria) as well so that should be fun. Plus all the content (Book 13 opens up yet new more areas to go and have a wander).

I'm exactly the same, I've played WoW for the last 2 1/2 years and really enjoy it. While I've been playing it I've tried Guild Wars and LOTRO, and both are good games, in particularly LOTRO which I thought was excellent. In LOTRO I got into a very helpful and friendly guild, but while playing both games I couldn't help thinking my time would be better served playing WoW.

There's something about WoW that makes me want to play it more than any of the other games I have, I think it's just such a well realised game.

I personally thought that LOTRO was the worst use of a licence since SWG. The defining fantasy books and they make a generic MMO by the numbers set in a tiny corner of middle earth.

I liked the setting, and the fact that to start with the players are only a small part of a small (although still quite large) gaming area. I think they do the licence a lot more justice than having them directly interfering with the storyline, taking part in epic battles etc right from the off.

I love LOTRO, play with the mrs, i've got a 50 hunter, burglar and guardian, they are all varied and interesting.

As mentioned the story line is pretty good.

I used to play EQ2 where you had t ocamp days for some mobs, you don't in LOTRO, al lthe regular quest mobs spawn fairly quickly, and all the harder instance ones are in an instance, always there when you get to them.

Raiding is good fun, there aren't that many raids yet (helegrod which is 24 man, and rift which is 12) but the exp comes out in sept or so, with 2 new classes.

they also release regular updates as books, which are a series of quests that you complete to progress the story line.

As for it being a tiny part of middle earth, they couldn't do the whole world in one shot but the other areas are on the map, to be opened up later, i think Rohan is next.

I've heard people commenting that the Beta of AoC is unplayable by some, cant even log in, i'd wait a bit

Thanks for your replys guys.

It seems to me that LOTRO is very lore based then? I haven't seen any of the films or read the books... Would I need to see the films and read the books to get an understanding of the game?

Yep you can play it quite easily without reading the book or seeing the film.

I'd still read the book and watch the films, best book and films out there In my opinion

Oh right that's good then. I haven't actually got round to seeing the films, I need to watch them. :)

The trial client is 8GB. Looks like it's going to be a long download. :p

I think the main reason "Hardcore WOW players" (major contradiction of terms) have problems with other MMORPGs is that suddenly they are in a much more difficult environment.

WOW really isn't much of a challenge - just join the game, start your race to the top level, get there in around a month.
Be "the best" for a couple of months and then move on - 3 months of gameplay.

Hopefully the next generation of MMORPGs will bring back the challenge aspect where it will take time to get to the very top - nothing that is due out soon really looks like it will unfortunately.
