OnLive now FREE and WORKS in the UK!

Played some last night, fantastic considering it was in the US.

Going to be great from my brother, set him with a his netbook attached to TV & a wireless/mouse keyboard. When he's playing Crysis on that without having to spend 400-800 on a gaming rig, I'll be annoyed!

Or get the microconsole itself http://www.onlive.com/service/microconsole

Rumoured to be around the £25 mark... Still, under £100 would seem like a good compromise to me, plenty of mark-up to cover the no longer subscription based service. And considering you wouldn't HAVE to buy it...

Signed up! Can i play any free games/demos or anything? Can't see jack :(

NeoReloaded - when you say you can't see jack do you mean that you cant even download the client?

When you're logged into the website try going here:

http://www.onlive.com/games

If you get a download link then download and install it. There will be a shortcut on your desktop for the application.

If when you go to that link you get redirected to http://www.onlive.com/account then the website has detected that you're running an OS that isn't capable of running the client. Under Linux I see this happen.

If you CAN download the client then when you run it the first thing it does is check your network latency. If it thinks it's too high then you'll be told and not be able to play.

It's only US servers at the moment. There's no timeframe been released on the installation of UK servers as far as we're aware...

Can confirm that I too am seeing improvements in performance.

A lot less lag meaning I'm pulling off headshots in the Just Cause 2 demo.

I'd also heard somewhere that the video quality is scaled based on performance and it definitely looks to be improved since I last tried it.

Still getting a warning about latency issues at the start though.

Thought I'd give this just a wee bump as the Micro Console has been confirmed to cost $99 and come with a full free game.

Available for pre-order here: http://www.onlive.com/game-system

Still not the news we've been waiting for in Blighty though. We want British servers damit! :)

Actually, I've just notticed what you're getting for you money with this... that's a console, controller AND a game for $99... They sell the games themselves for ~$40 for newer titles at the moment. That's fairly impressive if you ask me.

No obvious inclusion of a headset though, for complete and simple MP setup.

There seems to be 4 possible responses when connecting to OnLive.

1) Connects without warning
2) Connects but warns of latency issues
3) Connects but warns of latency issues and warms of further possible problems with using a Wifi connection
4) Doesn't connect. Warns of latency issues and does not give the option to connect as performance would be too bad.

Just tried this on my new Virgin 50Mb line at home. It's a little laggy but the resolution is pretty high.

Annoyingly I keep getting emails about their latest deal but it's not available in the UK. You buy preorder Homefront and you get the console free! That's a pretty good deal right there if you ask me.

How do you "fix" latency and input lag from a streamed image, you can't.
Not without offloading some of the game offsite, which means more hardware and cost. Understand there's a limit to how fast data can travel, you cannot go past this limit.

It doesn't matter if you have 4Mbit or 100Mbit, there's a point where the data streamed to you will not increase in quality and your latency won't getter better.

Remember that we're all connecting to US servers at the mo. There's no UK installation yet but latency will be hopefully be reduced, for us, when this happens.

I'm not aware of any way to see your ping to the server your currently connected to...

Just noticed this news about Autumn UK launch (http://blog.onlive.com/2011/06/02/happy-1st-birthday-onlive/)

Seems like both Player Tag and Email are checked across both UK and US servers. I.e. I couldn't sign up to the UK page with my already registered "US" Email nor could I use my already registered "US" Player Tag.

Sign up for a UK account with alternative credentials just in case theirs future issues though.

EDIT: For those of you that signed up to the UK account for me it wasn't obvious how you could actually use it once registered. I get the impression that you're not meant to at the moment. However, if you go to the US site (http://www.onlive.com/) you can sign in and download the app and start using it straight away.

I get the impression that there has been more improvements to the service as this is the best it's preformed for me yet. Higher resolution video with less lag. Got to the point where I'd consider dropping a fiver on some of the games rather than just using the free demos to try things out!

Strange. I managed to log in to the service with my UK details on the US client. Mind you, that's the opposite of what you are saying. :D

Ehhh I don't think so... I agree with you. What I'm trying to say that it looks like both "US" and "UK" accounts are on the same system. Which we would expect them to be.

I couldn't register again on the UK site with my previously registered details and both my old US account and new UK account work fine with the client.

The only issue appears to be that you can only log in and download the client from the US site but either US or UK details will work on their site.

I think everyone was under the impression that there would be some sort of restriction imposed to stop non US players playing. However it appears there isn't any at all other than the fact they don't publicise how to download it :)

Just tried Fear 3 there. I'm finding it playable in terms of lag but yeah, the FPS genre doesn't lend itself well to any latency at all.

Graphically as well I'm not sure if it's because of the entire screen movement with a FPS but it does seem to be sent in a pretty low / blurry resolution.

Just noticed the news about the 22nd of September launch.

Love the idea of this but agree that it's maybe a fraction too early in terms of our network infrastructure.

Saying that, it works fantastically for me.

DarkBahamut - I think you miss the point of it. You've got a computer that can run these games fine. What I would use OnLive for, if I was you, is to try out the demos of games - for free.

I on the other hand will be buying 5 or 6 consoles so that I can play while making the tea or sitting on the porcelain throne :)

Point to note is that from the emails I've been getting while signed up to the US accounts you're probably better off waiting a month or two after launch and instead of picking up a console with free game, pick up a game with free console!

Just got this in my inbox:

INTRODUCING THE ONLIVE APP!
Now you can experience console-quality gaming on your Android tablet and smartphone. Launch a top-tier game anywhere. Play it everywhere.
Experience top-tier games on your tablet: No more flinging birds.
Pick up your games anywhere: Play over WiFi or your mobile network.
Play via touch or controller: Play select games via touch, or play them all with the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller. Learn More

Sounds pretty cool! The fact the latest Android OS can make use of the wireless controller via its optional USB dongle is pretty dam slick.

That's a portable console that you can play anywhere if you've a decent internet connection! That's a pretty big IF though :)

Bluetooth? O.o

:p

I'm aware of how current technologies could technically be used to make connections between devices it's more a comment on the locked down nature of Apple devices and software.

Since the release of the "Epic Citadel" demo on the iPad I've long looked for a way to use a bluetooth controller as a controller in legitimate apps. To me the graphic fidelity possible with the iPad combined with PS3 controller made it look like a very attractive portable console.

I know it's been possible with Jailbroken apps, such as emulators, and I know Android tablets now has "usb controllers" as a massive selling point. First of all it seems strange to me that Apple are allowing a FREE app that allows people to play games and on top of that it's the ONLY app I know of that has controller support.
