Hi there, just got meself the following...

Asus P5K Premium
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
OCZ 4GB 800mhz EB memory...

Everything seems to be running fine, the bios detects the CPU as having 4 cores, did a fresh install of windows xp.

But its only seeing 1 core I think, in task manager there is only 1 CPU graph, and CPU-Z is only showing 1 core also....

:(

Awwwwww, why me, would really appreciate some help or some pointer to a CPU driver? or something that I might be missing.

Thanks in advance for any help

Sounds weird. Check in device manager under 'Computer' (at the top) it's installed the Multiprocessor ACPI kernel and not the single core (Uniprocessor) version.

It should do this automatically unless you've turned off ACPI in the BIOS which isn't usually even an option these days.

Hi thanks for replying.

It says...

"Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC"

Under CPU in Device Manager, there are 4 x Q6600 listings...

Do update driver and manually browse for the multiprocessor version. Install that and reboot.

Edit: Actually I just checked my laptop and it didn't have a driver for multicore so it must be encompassed in the normal ACPI driver in XP. In Windows 2000 you had two distinct kernels.
With that being the case I don't quite understand the issue. You say it's XP

Do you have SP2 installed? The only other thing I can think of is you are using XP Home and it might not have been multicore aware until a later service pack. Home only supports 1 processor out of the box while Pro supports 2.

thanks for all your help peeps, seems to be sorted now :)

I cast my mind back and remembered that the cd im using to install (a slipstreamed XP disc with SP2 + a load of updates intergrated) only had the standard single processor ACPI driver on it, couldn't uninstall in device manager, was greyed out...

So had to do a complete reinstall :)

Oh well few hours down the toilet but peace of mind is restored :)

All cores now visible
