Only 17 races on 2012?

Same here. I remember the "good old" days of the mid 90s where we had 16 races in 16 consecutive weekends. Or I think they were consecutive weekends. Now we've got 18/19/20 races with more governments wanting a GP I think we're just stretching the teams too much and diluting the value of each race weekend.
Arf. Back when it was 16 races, it was almost consistently every other weekend, not consecutive.

I think they usually had a three week break for going out of Europe though. Mind you, they usually evened that out with the odd back-to-back.

Hmm obviously my mind playing tricks on me there then. :)

Bernie bought Paul Ricard a tore down all the grandstands to allow for massive runoffs. It is a test circuit. It has hosted races recently, but they have been 'TV only' races as there are no spectator facilities at all.

As for the alternating with Spa, if the only other option is no Spa at all then it is fine by me. However, if F1 is going to start turning its back on the best tracks in the world in favor of racing around New York streets, it doesn't bode well for the future :(

Edit: just watching highlights from the GT3 race at Paul Ricard. They would need to build an entire pit and paddock complex to cater for F1, but more importantly, this would be hated by the fans. It's just one massive tarmac run off with a race track painted on it.

He's not wrong.

Is F1 and MotoGP at Barcalona publicly funded?

If so, its understandable. While the fee's are insignificant in the big picture, for a country that it totally ****ed financially, the 'image' of spending millions on a couple of races is not good for public perception.

They're laying some corn down, that's all. They'll plead poverty to Bernie, Bernie will tell them to get knotted, they'll 'miraculously' find the funds, everyone will act surprised.

Simples!

*squeak*

We can only hope.

Valencia won't be missed at all but it would be a shame to loose Barcelona as well.

But Barcelona is just as dull as Valencia in racing terms, even worse so since they stuck that stupid chicane out the back before the final turn (as apparently slowing down can help overtaking...)

Good riddance to both

The Chicane was not added for overtaking, it was added to reduce the speed through the final turn as the cars were going through it much faster than the run-off area was designed for.

Oh yeah sounds more plausible, could have sworn someone said should be able to overtake now they slow down for that bit.

Either way a very very dull track to go racing on these days (even if last years race was tense for someone trying to pressure Vettel). Probably should just stick to being a test track

There have only ever been two great GPs at the Circuit de Catalunya - the first one in 1991 (mainly for that duel down the straight between Senna and Mansell) and 1996 when it was wetter than a particularly wet thing and Schumacher showed everyone the way home with a half-broken Ferrari. It's just too familiar to all the teams to throw up any major surprises.

Bring back Montjuïc! :)

I don't think anyone would miss either Spanish race, they are both typically boring events and Barcelona is a rubbish 'race' circuit for F1 cars as they seem incapable of getting close to one another when it's dry. Be nice to see Montjuic back but as Bernie said and everyone critacised, F1 is going to be leaving lots of European places as they simply dont have the cash to spend on such things as they are civilised societies in the main. Easy for back of beyond land as they simply stop paying for hospitals or schools so they can ***** it all on racing.

Sounds like a much better world, Music classes taught by v12s preferably... Right up until I need to go to hospital that is.

Do you think it is plausible that some day enough tracks will pull out to force Bernie to make the fees slightly less absurd? Seems nearly all of the tracks are making a loss...
If enough classic tracks went I imagine it would only be a matter of time before top teams start to follow?
