I have been given my cousins computer to fix as it keeps coming up with a userinit.exe error on bootup.

It is running WinXP SP1. I tried to install SP2 firstly but the update service will not work.

So I started thinking that there was a virus on the system. I installed avast on the computer, it restarted, and started scanning the system (pre XP booting). It found one file so I clicked delete.

Didn't realise I clicked delete all!! It has removed various .dll files now and the PC will load upto the user logon screen, allow you to select and account and then just hang.

Can I use the recovery console or somthing to repair /re-install the .dll's?

Thanks.

Use the repair install feature on the XP disc. I think you need to avoid the first repair install option and choose install. Then you will find another repair install feature later on.
