Oops!

Wahoo! Installing W7 on ma new rig. :D

Damn this thing is quiet! Three mahoosive case fans, 2 x 120mm fans on my H50 plus the PSU fan - quieter than my other rig with 4 under-volted 120mm!

Very happy so far and build went without a hitch - so far lol.

Unfortunately wont have time to tinker with any OC until tomorrow night :(

Nice job sir. I wish I had the skill and/or confidence to watercool and overclock to those levels.

I just noticed this remark...

Stan fuels himself with Whisky when he OC's his stuff...

[First Dram of Whisky]
CPU Temp: 75C
Stan: "It's gettin a wee bitty hot. Better be careful noo"

[7th Dram]
CPU Temp: 95C
Stan: "Ach **** it! I can spare 5 degrees! It'll be reet, no bother!
*adds more volts*

:D

Hehe.

How important is the waterblock in sustaining low temperatures? For example, the Heatkiller 3.0 LC vs Heatkiller 3.0/ 3.0 LT? If the radiator and pump are oversized (triple rad + MCP655 for CPU+northbridge), will it really make any difference on the max o/c?

Woot!

Got ma rig running at 4.2GHz. Running Prime95 for about 15 minutes now and so far so good.

Went for 200x20 with the Turbo option, so running 200x21. My RAM is running at stock which is nice :D

So far all voltages are at stock. :)

Temps are a bit odd. Two cores are at 80/81, and the other two are at around 77/78. Actually now I look at it 4C isn't that much of a difference. Though at some point I may reseat the H50 and use some AS5 [had run out yesterday :(]

Nice clocks Sirius, welcome to the 4.2Ghz club :D Also give either IntelBurnTest or Linx a go for really getting the temps up!

You always get a bit of variation - uneven TIM application (either yours or just as likely under the heatspreader), cores not being entirely symmetrical within the die, etc. etc. I get a similar variation with my Q6600 and it's never done that any harm.

My Q6600 used to be a little uneven, by about 1 or 2C. It just seems like an awfully large difference when you see 7x vs 8x. Actually looking at the difference from typing my earlier post 4-5C is not that much, especially since I am almost 20C clear of Thermal Shutdown lol.

I think it may be my fitting of the H50 [or at least it isn't helping! Was a bit finicky and the pre-applied stuff might not have spread out as well as it could. Still, it is only a minor issue and I am not about to go taking it apart any time soon :p

They even stayed at the same temps under IntelBurnTest. Looks like my H50 is doing a damn fine job if IBT can "bring high end processors to their knees" and not push my temps over 82. Even at Maximum Stress  :D

This is the quickest damn OC ive ever done lol. Think I will let it loose on some foldy goodness and see how it gets on! :D

My gaming rig, running Prime95, had temps of 87-85-84-82 (was 80-77-77-75 while folding). As Berserker says, I've had the same with all my Q6600s. The lowest difference I've had has been 3 degrees - the worst about 7 degrees.

Impressive OC on stock volts. I read of people getting awesome clocks at stock all the time on the net frequently but I've never been that lucky. Surprised your temps are so high for stock volts though.

I am assuming they are stock volts, I haven't manually changed any. :p

Better check that the mobo hasn't changed them for you! They're set at auto by default.
My cores currently read: 79,78,79,74 - the fourth core is significantly lower than the others. I wondered if it might be anything to do with the first three cores and most of 4 doing one workload (e.g. folding) and then a bit of other CPU usage (web browsing, etc) which is less intensive (maybe) so less heat production.

Edit: beaten. I doubt they're too high though because my temps (above) are at 1.3V, and my air intake temp is ~18ºC on push-pull. And that's at 4.1GHz.

Ah, it would seem the board did do something on its own! Running at 1.375 Volts. Would explain the tasty OC and higher temp :D

I have a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

If my i7 went straight to 4.2GHz and stable [so far!] without me doing very much, I wonder what it can do on water when I can afford it!?

There's still plenty of time for it to fall over yet :p

I prime'd/Linx'd for 24 hours each and it's just passed 8 days of non folding so I'm calling it stable :D

Edit:- When using wither IBT or LinX did you select all your ram to test using the maximum option?

Yes I tested as much as was available - 4.8GB iirc.

And I know it could still fall over, but im hoping it wont! :p

In the very unlikely event it does [optomistic mode: ON as you can see :p] I have a bit of headroom temp-wise to up the voltages :)

Only got the e-mail to send back the faulty block this morning. Luckily, I had the foresight to order a replacement from OcUK on Friday which arrived a half an hour ago. It's an XSPC Delta V3 (they didn't have any of the Yellowstone ones) - the shiny retention plate doesn't match the colour scheme but it'll do for now. Got it plumbed in and has been running for 10 minutes with no leaks so far. I have to go for an eye test shortly so I'll leave it running while I'm away. If it all looks good when I get back, I'll add the dye, top up the reservoir and leave it running for another few hours to make sure it's all good before I attach the block.

My first watercooling build - I'm all excited :D
