I am currently using a closed back gaming headset. The problem is when gaming I am totally cut off form what happening around me. For instance I can't hear the door bell ring and sunsiquently missed a couple of deliveries Just wondering what you guys are usings, closed back or open back headsets. And those using open backed any reccomendations that would not mean me selling a kidney.

BTW, I am looking at headsets with the mic

Using open-back for similar reasons, plus I'm one of those people that needs to hear themself speak or I start raising my voice more than usual. Really don't handle closed + mic well at all.

I recommend the Philips SHP9500 or SHP9500S which is what I'm using. They are EOL but can still be found from ali something, new, for a decent price (£60-ish plus shipping). A DAC might be needed to get the best out of them. Despite only having 32 ohm impedance, my pair sounded pretty flat through the motherboard audio. Experiences apparently vary with others not reporting the same. Sound was vastly improved when I added a cheap Creative Play!3 USB DAC (£20-ish) and then it got even better through tinkering with the software. Add a Vmoda Boom Pro mic (£25-ish) and also a little pop filter for the mic if you want icing on the cake, and all set. Got the whole package for £100 + a little in shipping a while ago and no regrets.

What budget are you looking at?

Only reason for using closed design headphone is noisy environment.
Open design is lot better starting point for accurate sound.
There just aren't much of open design headsets at any price point, because while worser starting point for sound quality, closed designs allows easy to achieve way above neutral bass.
Which is good for selling complete trash.

QPAD used to have open design QH-85, but I think production was ended about two ago and there are now very little of those in sale.

Besides that it's down to adding separate mic to open headphone.
And open headphones of audio makers are clearly above that price level.
So after that Philips it's really down to Superlux models, many of which can be gotten for very good price.

Though many of them wouldn't be that easy for DIY mic modding.
Except for Beyerdynamic's design imitating HD-330, which I bought just as experiment.
For its price it certainly has good sound, falling only step behind its imitation goal Beyerdynamic DT990. (good balance between details and bass for general gaming)
Coiled cable just is very good and ear pads could be bigger.
That could be modded quite easily, if you can find this kind separate 3,5mm plug mic:

Agree there just aren't many, I spent a fair bit of time yesterday and while there are open back headphones under £100 I only found one actual open back headset with mic for under £100 - an apparently not very solidly built Koss.

In OP's position, I'd do a (£35) Superlux + (£35) ModMic 4.0 combo. The Modmic 5.0 sounds better but is more expensive. In any case, I'd be interested in seeing what's actually out there that I may have missed. Hopefully people will list a few.

This one might be interesting. Esa mentioned it and I found one available in UK:
QPAD QH-85 Pro Gaming Headset with Open Ear Cups Design, Black

Similar to Takstar Hi 2050 headphones apparently. Can be found for £75 + a little shipping.

I've heard a lot worse mics on gaming headsets. Note there is also a closed version of the QH-85.
