Open backed headphones

Do the full cup open-back headphones actually allow you to hear what is going on in the house?

As long as your volume isn't too loud to drown out other noise, yes. I have a "semi-open" pair and I can hear when my flat mate 2 rooms away is hitting a bong. Of course turning the volume up will drown out anything. So yeah, open back headphones should solve your problem.

How about a baby monitor with a flashing light on it? Doesn't solve the wife issue I guess.

Don't think the Sennheiser name means quality, it only does for some of their products - certainly not the cheap headsets mentioned.

The gaming lines aren't audiophile quality no but the sound quality is up there with any other gaming headset and exceed many of the more popular gaming brands by quite a margin. Same with regards to build quality. The much older pc140/50 lines were a little more lacking in sound quality for the brand name.

I would love to get some expensive headphones as mentioned above, I simply can't afford them.
I don't listen to music on my PC at all, only gaming. I'm perfectly happy with the quality of the Asus ones, I just don't like the closed back design.

Just a possible solution to your initial problem from me.

Have you tried setting your headphones to "listen" to your mic? this plays the recorded audio through your headphones and mimics the natural feedback you get from the volume of your own voice.

Just a suggestion. If you're at all interested I can help you set it up, although it's fairly simple.

I'm really interested in trying this if you don't mind talking me through it.
I'm running win 7.
Thanks

This is how you do it with Tactic3D Wrath and Sound Blaster Z.

You just need to press, enable the test function and you will be able to hear what you say.

Have not tried this with my onboard realtek as I got lot of static with my onboard sound.

Thanks for the help but it doesn't work very well. All I get is my own voice with a delay.
I've decided to order the Sennheiser PC 320.
Should be here on Monday, thanks for all the suggestions and help.
