What does this actually mean?

is this literally the box has just been opened and there’s nothing missing and no scratches etc? Not been returned due to dead pixels?

Not sure about monitors but I had a open box deal from another shop and the motherboard I/O shield was missing

It’s a laptop I’m looking at, might just buy it and see

It means either an item which is being resold after a return or RMA, or was used retailer or was damaged before arriving at the retailer.

Depending on which company you purchased it from, the device may be defective, damaged, have accessories missing, have unoriginal or damaged packaging, or just be old and unwanted.
Usually you should treat these items with the same caution as other second hand, in that you're taking a risk on getting a subpar or unacceptably damaged product.

If the company offers free return shipping I usually am not concerned to buy, otherwise I'm always cautions.

Ohhh I see, well it’s from overclockers and says open box, it’s only £100 less than the original but I thought it it’s just open then that would be ok? I’m not sure now

Given OCUK have attentive support staff, you could try asking about it in the presales forum.

I've bought "B" grade from OCUK before, had success most of the time but had to return a keyboard once.
I think OCUK also offer returns but not free returns, so I would look up how much it would cost to return it, and weigh that cost up against the potential savings. Most of the time it makes sense, especially if support are willing to have a look at the device and confirm that it has no dead pixels and validate it runs up OK.

For example, if a open box washing machine was being offered without free returns I'd defiantly avoid it unless absolutely certain. Open box SSD's are almost always worth it, as they are both durable and cheap to return.
